Ophthalmic Technician

Responsibilities

Obtain and accurately document comprehensive medical and ophthalmic histories utilizing an ophthalmic-based Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system.

Perform preliminary examination screenings, including :

Visual acuity (distance and near)

Pupil assessment

Confrontational visual fields

Tonometry

Perform diagnostic imaging, including Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and fundus photography as needed.

Assist physicians with office-based procedures such as :

Intraocular injections of medications

Laser photocoagulation

Pneumatic retinopexy

Prepare examination rooms with necessary supplies, instruments, and medications to ensure efficiency and patient safety.

Maintain and clean ophthalmic instruments and equipment according to established protocols.

Demonstrate working knowledge of ophthalmic terminology, anatomy, and diagnostic procedures.

Develop competency and proficiency using advanced EMR systems (MDI), digital imaging systems, and electronic prescription programs.

Communicate effectively and compassionately with patients, physicians, and staff to ensure excellent patient care and smooth clinic flow.

Accurately relay physician instructions to patients and coordinate with other departments or referring offices when needed.

Assist with patient flow to ensure timely and efficient operation of the clinic.

Travel to local offices as needed to meet business demands.

Participate in ongoing training, educational meetings, and cross-departmental collaboration.

Maintain strict patient and practice confidentiality (HIPAA compliance).

Perform other related duties as assigned by the clinical supervisor, office manager, or physician.

Required Skills

High school diploma or GED required.

COA or COT certification preferred but not required .

Minimum of 1 year of recent ophthalmic or clinical technician experience preferred.

Ability to learn new skills, information, and procedures quickly.

Excellent computer proficiency and ability to navigate multiple software programs simultaneously.

Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain instructions clearly and compassionately to patients.

Demonstrated problem-solving abilities and sound clinical judgment.

Professional demeanor with strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Ability to work effectively both independently and within a team environment.

Experience in patient triage, tonometry, and assisting physicians with minor office procedures preferred.

Reliability, flexibility, and willingness to travel between local office locations as business needs require.

Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, patient-centered environment.
