Nature of Work
Performs entry-level professional civil engineering work, including plan design, project management, and / or contract administration.
Environmental Factors
Position may involve both inside and outside work, depending on the functional area. Outside work involves exposure to all weather conditions, traffic, noise, dust, gases, asbestos, radiation, electrical systems, and construction equipment.
Physical Factors
Position may involve light to moderate physical activity; ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 40 pounds; ability to move about construction sites. Safety equipment includes hard hat, traffic vest, ear plugs, eye protection, and safety shoes.
Work Situation Factors
Position involves managing competing demands, performing multiple tasks, working to deadlines, occasional work beyond normal hours, and responding to customer issues. Regular attendance is essential. The position is subject to drug testing per regulations and policies.
Additional Notes
First consideration may be given to current City of Las Cruces employees who meet the minimum qualifications. Meeting or exceeding minimum qualifications does not guarantee participation. This position is a full-time, regular, exempt role in the Utilities Department, potentially filling other related vacancies. The grade is RX20.
Duties and Responsibilities
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or related field plus three years of experience. A combination of education, experience, and training may be considered.
Valid driver's license required. Must have an acceptable driving record. NM EIT certification required; eligibility to obtain NM PE licensure within one year. Storm Water Pollution Prevention certification may be required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of codes, standards, and practices related to civil engineering projects, construction safety, surveying, and software. Ability to interpret drawings, analyze traffic control, communicate effectively, and work cooperatively with others. Skills in solving installation conflicts, measuring work, calculating quantities, verifying calculations, and operating software.
