The Medical Director of the Student Health Center (SHC) is responsible for overseeing the care provided by the medical staff to the University of Missouris student population. This leadership role ensures the delivery of high-quality healthcare, manages medical staff, and works collaboratively with other departments to support the overall health and well-being of Mizzou students. The Medical Director, as part of the SHC Leadership Team, will also work collaboratively with other internal team members to develop policies, processes, lead and co-lead clinical initiatives, and provide guidance on health-related issues affecting students and the university community.

Key Responsibilities :

Medical Staff Oversight :

  • Provide direct medical care to presenting patients and students, including diagnosis, treatment, and management of health conditions.
  • Supervise and ensure a high quality of care is delivered by SHC medical staff, including physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and contracted healthcare providers such as Attending Psychiatrists and Residents.
  • Oversees compliance with immunization requirements for the general student population and students in health-related programs .
  • Provides medical oversight of the immunization area.
  • Work in conjunction with billing staff to provide clinical education on appropriate charting to ensure full revenue potential from our commercial payors.
  • Work collaboratively within SHC leadership team to establish and maintain clinical protocols, guidelines, policies, processes, and procedures in accordance with standards of care, university policies, and legal requirements.
  • Coordinate with MU Counseling Center, the Wellness Resource Center, and other campus resources to address the holistic health and well-being needs of students.

Leadership, Supervision, and Management :

  • Lead and manage a team of physicians, advanced practice providers, and other healthcare providers, ensuring effective staffing, training, and professional development, always seeking to motivate and improve productivity and performance by the medical staff.
  • Coordinate and oversee medical staff scheduling to ensure the efficient allocation of resources, thereby maximizing student access to healthcare services and enhancing overall service delivery.
  • Promote and oversee the use of health technology, including electronic health records (EHR), telehealth services, AI, and health informatics, to enhance care delivery and student engagement.
  • Provide oversight and management of CLIA waived lab including Provider Performed Microscopy.
  • Participate in Quality Improvement, Patient Safety and Risk management programs.
  • Support professional development and mentorship of emerging healthcare leaders within the SHC, promoting a culture of continuous learning and leadership growth.
  • Administer comprehensive performance evaluations in strict accordance with university policies and the established standards of the Division of Student Affairs, ensuring accountability, professional development, and operational excellence.
  • Promote a positive, collaborative, and supportive environment within the SHC by consistently demonstrating leadership and modeling professional, caring behaviors towards patients and colleagues.
  • Address and mediate conflicts within the clinical team, promoting resolution strategies that align with university policies and support a healthy workplace culture.
  • Coordinate a structured schedule of ongoing continuing medical education (CME) opportunities for medical and clinical staff.
  • As assigned, serve as a liaison between the Student Health Center, MU Health Care and University administration, faculty, staff, and students, facilitating accurate and effective communication, while collaborating on matters related to student health, wellness, and public health.
  • Strategic Planning and Program Development :

  • Along with other SHC leaders, develop and formally document disease prevention and public health programs tailored to the specific needs of the Mizzou student population, ensuring alignment with institutional health objectives and compliance with guidelines and recommendations established by bodies such as the CDC, Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Columbia / Boone County Public Health and Human Services, and other relevant public health authorities.
  • Contribute to strategic planning for SHCs future direction, including expansion of services, adoption of new technologies and techniques, and opening to non-users and untapped markets within the MU community. Ability to provide long-term vision for and integrate specialties and subspecialties into the services offered by the SHC based on student needs.
  • Assist in preparation of the annual budget and participate in ongoing management of current year budget. Analyzes and implements strategies to promote cost-effective utilization of resources.
  • Assist with issues related to health insurance plan participation.
  • Stay current on public health issues and trends relevant to college students health, incorporating best practices into the centers services and reporting out as necessary.
  • Serve as a key medical advisor in emergency preparedness and response planning, including infectious disease outbreaks, campus health crises, and coordination with local / state public health agencies.
  • Policy Development and Compliance :

  • Ensure the medical staff complies with all applicable state and federal regulations related to healthcare and professional conduct, including, but not limited to those related to patient privacy (HIPAA), student privacy (FERPA), and all relevant insurance laws and regulations.   Additionally, this position will remain in compliance with and consistently model adherence to SHC policies and approved processes.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of internal and external healthcare regulations, insurance, and accreditation standards for student health centers.
  • Help author and maintain written policies in SHCs document management system (i.e., Power DMS). Work collaboratively with SHC leadership team to address ongoing use, maintenance, and evolution of policies and procedures.
  • Collaborate with appropriate internal and external stakeholders to ensure ongoing compliance with the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) standards or those of another approved accrediting agency.   Contributes to the successful continuation of accreditation at SHC.
  • Collaboration and Advocacy :

  • Collaborate with campus leadership and professionals, including those in the Counseling Center, the Wellness Resource Center, the Health Related Profession schools, the MU School of Veterinary Medicine, the Division of Student Affairs, academic departments, Department of Athletics, and other stakeholders, to address student health and well-being needs and concerns of students, while offering forward thinking education relevant to these areas, as appropriate.
  • Actively contribute to assigned health and well-being related committees and campus initiatives to educate and integrate student health and well-being into the University of Missouris strategic planning and activities aligned with its mission.
  • Education and Outreach :

  • Provide or delegate the development and delivery of educational programs and clinical experiences to students, residents, faculty, staff, and the larger campus community.
  • Oversee teaching programs (primary care medical students, medical residents, and nurse practitioner students) in clinical services.
  • Provide training opportunities for health professions students.
  • Actively engage with campus entities, student organizations, and groups on health and well-being issues affecting the campus population.
  • A minimum of 5 years of providing direct outpatient care experience.

    A minimum of 3 years as a supervisor of other licensed and board-certified physicians in a direct patient care setting.

    Strong knowledge issues related to the health and well-being of college students, including mental health, sexual health, preventative care, travel medicine, and chronic disease management.

    Demonstrable experience with healthcare administration, human resources, risk management, quality improvement and budget management.

    Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, other university employees and engage with student populations, while projecting a positive image of the SHC. This may include serving as a public health officer for the University of Missouri, Columbia campus.

    Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, time management, and task completion skills.

    Medical Doctor (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO)

    State of Missouri medical license or able to obtain a State of Missouri medical license

    DEA and Missouri BNDD or the ability to obtain upon hire

    Board certification in a primary care discipline (Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Pediatrics) relevant to the health and well-being of college students.
