Position Summary
Under general supervision performs work of moderate difficulty in performing the inspection of building construction in residential, commercial, industrial, and public buildings to ensure compliance with the codes of the City of Toledo and the State of Ohio; performs property maintenance code inspections and sign inspections to ensure conformance to the Toledo Municipal Code; performs related work as required. Essential job functions include :
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of : Building materials, practices, and methods of construction. City and State Building Codes and related laws and legal procedures for code enforcement. Possible defects in structural, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and fire protection systems and effective corrective measures. The methods, materials and techniques of the construction trade. Occupational hazards and safety precautions of the construction trade.
Skill in : Interpreting State mandated codes, the Toledo Municipal Code and related laws. Enforcing regulations with firmness and tact. Advising property owners and contractors on methods of obtaining code compliance for violations. Reading construction drawings and comparing them with construction in progress. Good customer service and communication skills in dealing with citizens, building owners, contractors and architects. Record keeping and report writing. The operation of computer technology, database usage, permitting software and internet communication devices.
Ability to : Have good customer service and communication skills in dealing with citizens, building owners, contractors and architects. Organize time and materials.
Required Education, Experience, and Certifications
Salary Information
Hourly rate : $34.46- $36.27 per hour. Employees in the classification of "Certified Inspector" will be compensated in the form of a quarterly stipend based on the number of active relevant State of Ohio certifications currently held. Relevant certifications include, but are not limited to : Building Inspector AND Residential Building Inspector, Electrical Safety Inspector, Plumbing Inspector, Mechanical Inspector AND Residential Mechanical Inspector, Plans Examiner. Employees who hold only a Building Inspector AND Residential Building Inspector certification, Mechanical Inspector AND Residential Mechanical Inspector certification, or Plans Examiner certification, and no other relevant certifications, shall not be eligible for a stipend as established through this program, unless and until they obtain an additional qualifying certification. In that event, said employee shall only receive a stipend for the additional qualifying certification(s). Employees in the Certified Inspector stipend program shall be limited to compensation for each relevant and qualifying certification held, up to a total of three (3) certifications.

Work Environment
The work environment described within this job description will be encountered while performing the essential functions of this job. This employee will have to travel to multiple worksites continuously. At times, this position will require extended work hours. The noise level in the work environment is very loud.
