The Structural Steel Projects Scheduler will develop, integrate, and maintain project schedules for all phases of structural steel fabrication and erection. The Scheduler ensures that contractual milestones and AISC requirements are met, resources are effectively allocated, and risks are proactively managed. This role works closely with Project Managers, Engineering, QA / QC, Procurement, and Production teams to drive timeline adherence, earned value visibility, and process improvement.
Responsibilities
- Project Scheduling & Integration : fabricate, coatings, freight, and erection; incorporate AISC hold points (welding inspection, NDE, coating cure intervals, dimensional verification) directly into schedules; use MS Project (and Primavera P6 when required) to monitor critical paths, dependencies, and float; update schedules to reflect progress, scope changes, and resource constraints.
- Coordination with Project Management : partner with Project Managers to ensure contract milestones, earned value metrics, and reporting requirements are aligned; provide CPI and SPI tracking; support Project Managers in client-facing updates and change management.
- Team & Stakeholder Communication : facilitate weekly meetings with Project Managers, Production, Procurement, and QA / QC to review upcoming activities and bottlenecks; coordinate with subcontractors and vendors to integrate delivery and inspection schedules; ensure consistent schedule reporting for internal and client-facing needs.
- Risk Analysis & Mitigation : identify risks such as material lead time delays, inspection rework, or weather-related delays; develop recovery / contingency plans in coordination with Project Managers and Production leadership; track Force Majeure delays and maintain documentation for contractual relief.
- Reporting & Documentation : maintain baseline, revised, and as-built schedules with detailed revision logs; generate weekly / monthly reports including EVM, CPI / SPI, and look-ahead summaries; provide schedule variance analysis and forecasting to management.
- Process Improvement : continuously refine scheduling practices using lessons learned and AISC / industry standards; recommend improvements in sequencing and resource allocation to reduce downtime and rework; support lean fabrication practices to enhance shop / yard efficiency.
- Additional Duties : promote a positive safety culture by integrating safety-critical tasks into the schedule; support Project Managers in maintaining client confidence through accurate forecasting; collaborate with QA / QC to ensure schedules reflect compliance checkpoints.
Qualifications
5+ years of experience in construction / fabrication scheduling, with at least 3 years in structural steel or heavy civil projects.Proficiency in MS Project; Primavera P6 preferred.Master-level proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, advanced formulas, VBA).Strong knowledge of structural steel fabrication processes and AISC standards.Proven experience with earned value management (EVM), CPI / SPI tracking, and variance analysis.Excellent communication and organizational skills.Education & Credentials
Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or Project Management preferred.PMI-SP (Scheduling Professional), AACE, or similar certifications preferred.Familiarity with AISC certification programs a plus.Reporting
Reports to the Director of Project Management, supporting Project Managers with schedule control and earned value tracking.
