JOB TITLE : Children’s Assistant, Grade 17

LOCATION : Headquarters Library

DATE AVAILABLE : August 1, 2025

SALARY : $1152 per month (Includes some benefits)

HOURS : 20 hours per week

Monday -Friday9 : 00am -1 : 00pm

( Note : Must be flexible to accommodate schedule changes may be asked to work othertimes)

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE : Bachelor’s degree and experience with children or equivalent combination of education and experience with children. Must complete pre-employment testing.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

  • Plans,promotes, and presentscreative and innovativeprogramsthatmeet the needs offamilies andchildren,birth through agetwelve,including story times, homeschool programs, and other specialevents and summer reading activities
  • IncorporatesThePalmetto Basics andEveryChild Ready to Read concepts into programsand environments for children ages 0-5
  • Tracksand submits program statistics
  • Activelyengages the public duringcommunity outreachprogramsin thelocal area schools,childcarecenters,orother publicspaces orspecial events
  • Responsiblefor maintaining an attractivechildren’s area in the library includingcollections, displays, signage and bulletin boards
  • Participatesin department meetings, assigned committee meetings, online discussions, andbook reviews
  • Providessuperior customer service when assistingpatrons of all ages withinformationand reader’s advisoryrequests, computers, digitaldevices, and other library equipment
  • Completesregulartraining related to children’s services andotherlibrary work
  • Remainsaware of safety and securityat all times
  • Substitutesfor other programs, departments, and branches as needed

    • KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS :

  • Bachelor’sdegree or equivalent combination of education and experiencewith childrenor equivalent combination of education and experience with children
  • Comfortableand proficient using technology
  • Excellentinterpersonal and customer service skills that display a positive attitude,cultural sensitivity, a sense of humor, withthe ability to interface withpeople from all backgrounds and age groups
  • Exceptionalwritten and oral communication skills
  • Creative,flexible and organized with good time management skillsand attention todetail
  • Abilityto take direction and work independently or in a team environment
  • Strongwork ethic with a willingness to take initiative
  • Experienceworking with children from birth through age 12 with strong knowledge ofchildren’s literature
  • Driver’slicense valid in the State of South Carolina with the ability to drive to otherlibraries or community outreach
