As an Attorney Supervisor for the Trial Group, you will have an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of indigent clients appointed to our office by the court. You will put your legal skills to work by preparing cases and representing clients through all phases of the court proceedings, all while having a positive impact on those in our community who are impoverished.

We Require

Juris Doctor or Doctor of Jurisprudence from an American Bar Association (ABA) approved law school

Five years of experience as an attorney, with at least two years in indigent representation

Other Requirements

Must be admitted to practice law and a member in good standing with the State Bar of Arizona at the time of application

Valid Arizona driver's license by the time of hire

Seven or more years of relevant experience as a practicing attorney

Prior experience supervising attorneys or staff in a law office

Job Contributions

Supervise and manage attorneys; manage performance, mentor, and provide development opportunities for assigned direct reports

Maintain a major felony case load

Present oral arguments as appropriate in support of clients' legal interests

Discuss and present analyses of legal issues to clients, court personnel, and related individuals

Prepare cases for trial by reviewing trial evidence, interviewing witnesses, visiting crime scenes, consulting with experts, and performing other case-related functions

Compose motions, briefs, correspondence, and other legal documents

Provide leadership for professionals, including other attorneys, mitigation specialists, investigators, and paralegals, consistent with the current assignment

Assist with the implementation, application, and oversight of policies, procedures, and practices for the office

Ensure compliance with applicable ethics and court rules and state and federal statutory and constitutional mandates

Meet, confer, and work cooperatively with public officials, agency heads, justice professionals, private citizens, service providers, and other stakeholders in order to advance the field of indigent representation

Communicate in person and by phone with clients, opposing counsel, co-workers, supervisors, and others

Travel to courts, jails, detention centers, and correctional facilities to effectively represent clients

Attend Continuing Legal Education seminars

Working Conditions

Most work is performed in an indoor office or courtroom environment

This position requires viewing traumatic subject matter, including crime scenes, accidents, etc.

Ability to meet deadlines with a high volume of work, interruptions, time pressures, handling multiple or complicated tasks, unscheduled tasks, frequently changing tasks, accuracy, decision making, concentration / vigilance, and / or teamwork

This position requires contact with the public and close working relationships with other staff members

Ability to lift, carry, or push up to 35 pounds for 200-300 feet

Work requires travel to and from job-related locations during a scheduled workday, subject to County policies regarding the use of County vehicles and / or private vehicles used on County business. May require both national and international travel outside of a scheduled workday for case-related investigation
