Lifeguard Position
Under direct supervision of Head Lifeguards, and Aquatic Specialists, the lifeguard position is responsible for patron surveillance and safety including general maintenance, cleaning, and inspection of equipment in the Aquatics area in the rec centers and outdoor pools. Lifeguards must exhibit enthusiasm and dedication to their work. Lifeguard applicants must be 15 years of age or older.
The City of Lakewood is currently recruiting variable employees for this position. A variable employee is an at-will employee who works in a seasonal or temporary capacity. Their work schedule is based on business need. This position would be a part-time non benefitted position.
Major tasks, duties and responsibilities include :
- Responsible for the surveillance and safety of all patrons in the entire pool area and locker rooms.
- Must always be at assigned station or in assigned guard stand except when attending to a rescue or accident.
- Know procedures for first aid and emergency situations as required and maintain accurate incident reports.
- Know and enforce all pool rules and regulations of the City of Lakewood in a firm, but polite manner.
- Maintain personal swimming fitness.
- Employ personal protection from sunburn or other health hazards associated with job responsibilities.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Reporting relationships include supervision received from the Aquatics Specialist and supplementary direction from the seasonal pool manager / assistant pool manager. Supervision given is none.
Knowledge, skills and abilities required include :
Ability to deal effectively with participants and the public in a positive way.Knowledge of pool safety and emergency action plans.Ability to maintain a safe environment at assigned location.Background check required.Technological skills include :

Current American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification with Deepwater Certification.Physical requirements include :
This position requires a medium level of physical ability including standing for long periods, bending reaching, lifting, jumping, walking, stretching, etc.Must be able to exert up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, and / or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and up to 10 lbs. force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body.Must be able to participate in the rescue or retrieval of an individual from the pool or assist an individual suffering from a medical condition.Background and reference checks will be conducted for all regular and some variable / seasonal positions.
