job_description.job_card.job_descriptionThe Registered Nurse (RN) plans and provides comprehensive nursing care including executing Licensed Independent Provider's orders, dispensing and administering medications, and assisting Licensed Independent Provider in examinations and treatment of patients. Applies nursing and supervisory techniques required in the care, treatment and referrals of inmates / residents. Performs all technical / clinical procedures within the scope of education and licensure. Attends sick call with the physician to see inmates / residents; prepares a list of inmates / residents to be examined; prepares examining room and equipment. Operates pill call, dispenses medication and documents as required by applicable policies and / or procedures. Calls Licensed Independent Providers for medication and treatment orders, and / or other emergencies. Examines and assesses new inmates / residents with illnesses or injuries or inmates / residents who become ill or injured; refers inmates / residents to emergency room or other appropriate healthcare facility as required by their condition. Performs emergency procedures as needed and notifies Licensed Independent Provider for treatment orders. Assists in coordinating professional medical services provided by contract personnel and ensures their needs are addressed. Must be a Registered Nurse (RN) licensed in the state of California. Must be able to perform nursing and supervisory techniques within scope of education and licensure. Rotating shifts including physically checking doors, windows and other areas to verify security. Monitors inmate / resident inpatient hospitalizations for early releases when appropriate. Provides guidance, supervises and monitors nursing care provided by licensed vocational / practical nursing staff and non-licensed medical staff. Maintains good working relationships with facility staff, nursing staff, contract providers and outside provider agencies. Utilizes established corporate, facility and correctional policies and procedures in decision making. Regularly evaluates provision of medical services to prevent inappropriate use or duplication. Maintains absolute security and confidentiality of all medical records. Assists Health Service Administrator with review of medical files to ensure documentation of all provided services. Closely monitors all potential catastrophic illnesses. Audits pharmacy use for adherence to formulary as directed or required. Complies with all applicable pharmacy laws, especially those covering controlled substances. Observes and records inmate / resident behavior. Inspects medical unit for items that could be used as contraband; securely stores or safely disposes of supplies and equipment. Provides health counseling and health education on individual or group basis as required. Assists Health Service Administrator to prepare and maintain various records, reports and logs. Reads, analyzes, comprehends and interprets medical and technical procedures, governmental regulations, legal and non-legal documents. Reviews, processes and responds to lawsuits; attends court hearings when necessary. Evaluates and recommends physical safety requirements for a safe working environment. Facilitates NCCHC / ACA / JCAHO accreditation of the medical program by providing required efficiency and appropriate medical services. Prepares and disseminates safety and accident reports as required; takes appropriate action in serious and unusual incidents and emergencies. Escorts or coordinates movement of inmates / residents to and from medical treatment areas. Performs searches of people and objects capable of concealing contraband. Engages in functions in confined areas including working rotating shifts and physically checking security. Takes appropriate action to prevent or diffuse potentially disruptive situations. Performs rescue functions at accidents, emergencies and disasters including administering basic emergency medical aid and evacuating people from confined areas.
