Overview :
An engineering services firm is seeking a Bridge Inspection Engineer to support a public sector client in maintaining the safety and integrity of critical transportation infrastructure. This role involves conducting inspections of bridges, large culverts, and retaining walls in accordance with the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) and client-specific guidelines. The engineer will assess structural conditions, assign ratings, and report findings to ensure public safety and protect infrastructure investments.
Location :
This position is based in a regional district and supports the Bridge Inspection Department of a public sector organization.
Key Responsibilities :
- Conduct biennial inspections of bridges per NBIS requirements
- Inspect large culverts (4' to 20' spans) and retaining walls
- Review inspection reports and determine specialized inspection needs
- Perform quality control reviews and emergency inspections (e.g., collisions, high water)
- Conduct in-depth inspections using access equipment for non-redundant steel tension members
- Perform special and post-construction inspections
- Prepare and submit detailed inspection reports
- Report deficiencies and recommend rehabilitation or replacement
- Coordinate repair work for damaged structures
- Work a standard 7.5-hour day with flexibility for specialty or emergency inspections
Qualifications :
Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited institutionMust hold Professional Engineer (PE) licenseStrong understanding of structural behavior and defect impactProficiency in reading technical documents and interpreting engineering dataKnowledge of bridge maintenance principles and inspection techniquesStrong verbal and written communication skillsBasic computer proficiency and adaptability to new softwareValid driver's licensePhysical ability to perform field inspections, including climbing, lifting, and working in confined spacesRequired Training (will be completed after starting)
