THE POSITION
The State of Connecticut, Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) is seeking an experienced Stationary Engineer to join their Power Plant Team. This position will monitor steam output and monitor for any system issue to include boiler, steam piping and water tower malfunctions and failures.

For over 140 years, DVA has been caring for its veterans and their dependents. This is accomplished through our : Office of Advocacy and Assistance, Residential Facility, Healthcare Center, and Cemetery and Burial Services. The DVA has supported Connecticut Veterans and continues this tradition with residential and healthcare programming on our campus in Rocky Hill. There are two paths for residency at the DVA :
Residential Facility : offers temporary, supportive living with programming designed to return Connecticut Veterans to independent living in the community;Sgt. John L. Levitow Healthcare Center : a state-of-the-art medical facility that offers long-term care for veterans with chronic, disabling conditions who require 24-hour assistance.When you walk through the doors of the Healthcare Center (HCC), one immediately feels a sense of community, comfort, and camaraderie. Our highly trained staff is dedicated to providing compassionate care to meet the unique needs of Veteran patients, built on the foundation of integrity, honor, and respect. PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In a state agency this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks involved in the operation of a moderate or large sized heating or power plant or for working as a technical maintenance or repair expert on powerhouse, high pressure steam and allied facilities and equipment; may be in complete charge of a small heating plant.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Upon taking over a shift, receives operating instructions from outgoing shift engineer;Inspects boiler room gauges, indicators, charts and records of operation, and the actual operating of the boiler room mechanical equipment and boilers, and issues any necessary instructions to subordinate(s);Acts similarly in regard to generating equipment if any;Makes various periodic and special tests and checks of facilities and equipment, making necessary adjustments;Maintains and repairs mechanical equipment, including tightening loose bearings, packing glands, and bolts, replacing wearing rings, replacing and repacking condenser tubes, renewing gaskets, renewing valves and stuffing boxes, and renewing value parts;Inspects operation of, maintains and repairs generating equipment, ice machinery, hot water heaters, laundry equipment, pumps, fans, compressors, electronic equipment, and other miscellaneous mechanical service equipment;Makes or supervises the making of simple boiler water analyses and determines necessary treatment;Calculates and records operating data;Performs minor tests for fuel specific gravity and gas leaks;Adds water treatment chemicals to boilers;May assist in general building maintenance and repair;May inspect and repair steam traps fed by main system at various locations;May remove pipe insulation materials; uses OSHA-approved methods;Performs related duties as required.As engineer in charge of a heating plant and related minor utilities
Performs and supervises maintenance and repair of boiler and boiler room equipment including feed pumps and fuel injectors or stokers;Supervises tending of boiler by others, issuing instructions, inspecting condition of equipment, and checking gauges and operation records;Performs related duties as required.KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
Knowledge of and ability to operate, maintain and repair boilers, generators and related mechanical equipment;Skillsinterpersonal skills;oral and written communication skills;Ability to utilize computer software.Minimum Qualifications - General Experience
Three (3) years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of steam boilers or of significant auxiliary boiler room or power plant equipment.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with the equipment and processes related to steam generationExperience with water chemistry in a boiler systemExperience with the maintenance of power plant equipment, e.g., pumps, valve maintenance, regulators, generators, etc.Experience working in a 24 / 7 environmentExperience working with 150psi or higher steam pressureSpecial Requirements
Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and / or certifications.
Physical Requirements
Incumbents must have adequate physical strength, stamina, agility, and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain fitness to perform duties.A physical examination may be required.WORKING CONDITIONS
Exposure to dust, noise and heat; risk of injury from equipment.May be required to complete an asbestos removal program. May require use of respirators and safety goggles.Conclusion
