Ammonia Maintenance Technician - Owensboro, KY

Summary The Ammonia (NH3) Maintenance Technician is responsible for the safe, efficient operation and maintenance of industrial ammonia refrigeration systems and facility utilities at Echo Lake Foods. This role includes performing preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on ammonia-based equipment in compliance with IIAR standards and internal safety protocols. In addition to refrigeration system responsibilities, the technician also supports general plant maintenance activities as needed. Success in this role requires strong technical knowledge of ammonia refrigeration systems, a safety-first approach, and experience working in food manufacturing or other highly regulated environments. Essential Functions Operate, monitor, and maintain ammonia refrigeration systems (high and low pressure), compressors, condensers, evaporators, and associated controls. Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on NH3 systems in accordance with PSM / RMP, IIAR, and company standards. Respond to system alarms and troubleshoot ammonia refrigeration issues in a timely and safe manner. Conduct daily system inspections and maintain detailed logs and documentation for regulatory and internal compliance. Support Process Safety Management (PSM) and Risk Management Program (RMP) initiatives, including participation in audits, training, and system reviews. Assist with general maintenance of plant utilities (boilers, air compressors, HVAC, water systems, etc.) as required. Work closely with production and maintenance teams to support refrigeration needs during manufacturing operations. Follow all safety policies and procedures, including lockout / tagout (LOTO), confined space entry, and chemical handling protocols. Expected Hours of Work This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are dependent on operational needs and may vary, Monday through Sunday.?The employee is required to be available as scheduled and may be required to be available for extended hours. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand. No travel is expected for this position. Required Education and Experience High school diploma or GED required; technical certification in industrial refrigeration or related field preferred. 3+ years of hands-on experience with ammonia refrigeration systems in an industrial environment. RETA certification (CIRO or CARO) strongly preferred. Knowledge of PSM / RMP programs and IIAR guidelines. Strong mechanical and troubleshooting skills. Ability to read P&IDs, refrigeration schematics, and service manuals. Proficient with CMMS systems and basic computer skills. Must be able to work at heights, in confined spaces, and in cold or wet environments. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in physically demanding conditions.
