Towson University :

Position :

The College of Fine Arts and Communication invites applications for a tenure-track, 9-month

Assistant Professor position in contemporary art history in the Department of Art + Design, Art History, and Art Education. Preferred start date is August 2026.

Qualifications :

Appointees required to hold a Ph.D. at the time of hire. Candidates with teaching experience, a global vision for developing the curriculum in contemporary art, a record of publication, and leadership experience are particularly encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities :

The successful candidate will be expected to show annual evidence of substantial research, advise majors, serve on faculty committees and participate in shared governance at the department, college, and university levels, and teach a variety of courses including a global survey and upper-level classes on modern and contemporary art. The candidate may have curatorial opportunities in the University Art Gallery and will be encouraged to engage with vibrant interdisciplinary programs on campus, to work with graduate students in the arts and humanities, and to take advantage of Towson’s close proximity to major collections such as those at the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Waters Art Museum, and the Reginald F. Lewis Museum.

The Department :

The Art History program is situated in the Department of Art + Design, Art History, and Art Education, and serves majors and minors as well as students across all programs in the department as well as the broader campus. The successful candidate will join three tenured faculty members and several lecturers specializing in various aspects of art history and museum studies. The program takes full advantage of Towson’s metropolitan location and liberal arts tradition and provides opportunities for research and collaborative, interdisciplinary learning both on campus and beyond.

Salary and Benefits :

Targeted salary range : $65,000 - $70,000 commensurate with experience.
