Overview
Shelter Counselor (Men's Shelter, Springfield) role at Clinical & Support Options, Inc. CSO is seeking Counselors for the Friends of the Homeless men's shelter in Springfield. Full-time and part-time positions available. Weekend availability required.
Responsibilities
- Greet, communicate and respond to shelter visitors and guests with respect and sensitivity
- Provide a safe, sanitary, and dignified environment for shelter guests
- Coordinate evening and overnight activities including bed assignments, meals, and safety assessments
- Coordinate shelter access through the intake process, ensuring documentation is obtained for record keeping and referrals
- Communicate and enforce shelter rules, policies and procedures
- Maintain and update guest files and communicate with staff through written and verbal reports
- Build relationships with guests, identify needs, assist with problem solving, and show empathy and acceptance
- Support guests in times of urgency or crisis and facilitate engagement with systems of care, including CSO nursing and behavioral health services; work to divert from 911 when possible
- Conduct room and bag checks to assess safety and remove dangerous / illegal items
- Be awake and alert during shift; complete guest intakes and annuals in the Electronic Client Records system and update as required
- Perform shift duties including rounds, ensuring timely routines, and documenting findings in the Electronic Records system
- Document incident reports as needed and coordinate with staff using shift reports
- May coordinate and participate in social support groups and activities designed to meet guest needs
Background / Qualifications
Bachelor's degree (preferred)High School Diploma or Associate's degree with experience in Human ServicesHuman Services related work or internship (preferred)Computer proficiencyValid driver's license and reliable transportationBilingual candidates are strongly encouraged to applyValues
