Overview
Senior Fire Protection Engineer role at Clark Nexsen, A JMT Company. This technical position focuses on project execution for multi-discipline and single-discipline facility design projects. The Senior Fire Protection Engineer will perform multiple aspects of fire protection engineering services, provide leadership to the fire protection team, and represent the Department Director as required.
Responsibilities
- Perform all aspects of fire protection design, including conceptual studies, programming, schematic documents, design development documents, and construction documents.
- Lead several projects of moderate complexity when required by schedule and resources.
- Meet with clients to prepare and / or validate proposed scope of services.
- Manage the fire protection portion of multi-discipline projects and work with Project Managers to meet budget, schedule, goals, and objectives.
- Coordinate, supervise, and communicate all aspects of the fire protection design within multi-discipline teams to ensure proper integration with other disciplines.
- Communicate with Contractors on Design-Build projects to verify system suitability.
- Manage and supervise fire protection support services for bidding, including addenda and amendments, and bid opening / tabulation.
- Manage and supervise fire protection support services during construction, including field visits, RFIs, shop drawings, and record drawings.
- Ensure staff compliance with quality control policies and procedures.
- Coordinate with and respond to the Department Director, Managing Principals, Project Managers, Design Managers, Operations Directors and senior management.
- Assist in presenting projects to clients, contractors, project team members, AHJs, and the public through all stages.
- Support company marketing and business development activities; establish and maintain positive client relationships.
- Provide technical guidance to fire protection staff; mentor and develop staff; lead training sessions.
- Assist in developing new or revised processes and procedures; represent the Department Director when unavailable.
- Lead or participate in staff performance discussions and provide input on annual reviews.
- Apply engineering techniques to design, install, modify, analyze, repair and test systems and equipment.
- Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, and reports; confer with engineers to implement procedures and resolve issues.
- Research and analyze proposals and data to evaluate feasibility, cost, and maintenance requirements.
- Specify system components or direct modifications to ensure conformance with design and performance specifications.
- Investigate equipment failures and provide recommendations to maintenance.
- Operate with a high degree of latitude and handle complex issues; lead as a subject-matter expert.
- Provide leadership, coaching, and mentoring; may act as a lead or first-level supervisor; interact with senior management.
- Use advanced techniques and processes with the potential for progression into management.
- Perform work with minimal supervision and resolve complex issues or refer only the most complex to higher-level staff.
- Possess comprehensive knowledge of the subject matter and continuously develop skills.
Project responsibilities
Perform Project Manager duties as assigned.Serve as Design Manager on projects as assigned.Responsible for discipline design and documentation of fire protection systems; coordination of plans and specifications.Develop discipline design approach, production methodology, and project plans.Prepare accurate, complete, and code-compliant drawings and specifications for schematic, design development, and construction document submittals.Review calculations and work products produced by engineers, EITs, and designers assigned to the project; review drawings produced by design staff.Prepare scope and fee proposals for fire protection portions of multi-discipline projects or single-discipline projects.Assist PM in development of project proposals, budgets and schedules; review discipline code analyses and specifications.Respond to RFI's and design checks; lead discipline bidding and construction administration activities; perform discipline QA / QC reviews.Monitor and adhere to project budget and schedule.Required Skills
Direct client contact; known as the go-to for fire protection, writes fee proposals, operates as PM on engineering-led projects.Recognized as an SME; certifications may include LEED, GGP, CDT.Understanding of sustainable design principles; LEED AP accreditation desirable; additional certifications such as CDT, CCS, or CCCA encouraged.Active participation in professional organizations (e.g., NSPE, SFPE, NFPA) desirable.Working familiarity with design / production and fire protection analysis software; ability to understand capabilities and interact with support staff.Required Experience
Bachelor of Science in Fire Protection Engineering from ABET-accredited curriculum; post-graduate degree preferred.Experience as lead designer or Fire Protection Engineer in federal, state, municipal, healthcare, commercial, higher education, or similar projects; experience with Design / Build and CM at Risk desirable.Licensed Fire Protection Engineer in at least one US state or jurisdiction; preferably local, by passing the Fire Protection Engineering written examination.Typically 10+ years of significant design and leadership experience in an engineering / architecture or multi-discipline firm.Working Conditions
Hybrid work schedule. Selected candidate is expected to work in a JMT office location at least three days per week or as needed. Most work is desk-based; some standing, walking, bending and light lifting may be required.
