Responsibilities
- Conducts complex and difficult forensic document examinations through the application of scientific practices for the recognition, collection, analysis, and interpretation of physical evidence for criminal and civil law or regulatory purposes, utilizing a full range of scientific methodologies and forensic instrumental techniques.
- Exercise independent discretion and judgment to render conclusions, form opinions and produce reports based on the examination and analysis of evidence and interpretation of scientific observation and data.
- Provide independent interpretations, conclusions and opinions through expert witness testimony; produce comprehensive reports and illustrative exhibits for federal, state, and local judicial proceedings.
- Maintain quality control of forensic work products by conducting ongoing technical work reviews of forensic document examiners to ensure adherence to accepted analytical methods, standards, and evidence handling requirements.
- Design and conduct innovative and complex scientific research to discover new forensic techniques and validation methods; generate detailed technical papers for publication in scientific and forensic journals.
- Serve as a subject matter expert and technical advisor on proper collection, preservation, packaging, and submission of criminal evidence; oversee and lead crime scene and evidence collection activities during major field investigations as a team leader.
- Oversee and coordinate programs, policies, and procedures to ensure laboratory procedures, forensic examinations, and evidence handling are up-to-date with current trends and techniques in the field.
- Plan, coordinate, and conduct training for inspectors and other law enforcement officials in laboratory services, evidence collection, and field examination training.
- Provide expert advice on technical developments and forensic examination issues; lead inter-agency task groups with national or global scope.
- Participate in professional associations and scientific symposiums; maintain appropriate certification in scientific disciplines.

Requirements
Knowledge of forensic science techniques, laboratory protocols, scientific methodologies, and forensic document examination procedures sufficient to conduct highly complex analyses and interpret evidentiary items.Knowledge of quality assurance and discipline principles, procedures, and protocols for technical work reviews of analysts.Knowledge of evidence collection, preservation, packaging, and shipment procedures to serve as a technical advisor and crime scene team leader during major field investigations.Ability to communicate orally and in writing to prepare reports and provide testimony as an expert witness.Ability to plan, coordinate and conduct training regarding laboratory services, evidence collection, and field examination.Education : Bachelor's degree in physical or biological sciences, life sciences, chemistry or a closely related field from an accredited college or university.Skill in the use of microscopes and digital / optical enhancement instruments.Ability to conduct and document scientific research related to forensic document examinations.Ability to develop and implement laboratory programs, policies, and procedures reflecting current trends and techniques in the forensic document discipline.This position requires an MBI clearance. This process can take up to 8 weeks from the date the offer letter is returned.
