This open competitive advertisement is for a SES (Selected Exempt Service) position located at Central Office in the Office of General Counsel.

This description reflects the Florida Department of Corrections Legal Services team mission : to provide comprehensive legal support and guidance to ensure operations comply with applicable laws and regulations, protect the rights of inmates, staff, and the public, and uphold justice and fairness within the correctional system.

JOB DUTIES

• Offer insightful legal advice to agency leaders and field staff on daily operations and civil litigation matters.
• Represent the Department of Corrections and its officials in state and federal courts, as well as administrative tribunals, handling everything from evidence review to trial representation and appeals.
• Oversee a large caseload of administrative, state, and federal civil cases managed by outside counsel, developing comprehensive legal strategies, coordinating discovery, and reviewing pleadings.
• Review, analyze, and draft proposed legislation, ensuring departmental policies and procedures are legally sound, and providing guidance to agency staff.
• Tackle legally complex and sensitive assignments and perform various tasks assigned by the General Counsel and Deputy General Counsel.
