Associate General Counsel

Summary

Texas Hotel & Lodging Association (THLA) seeks a full-time Associate General Counsel (AGC) to provide legal advice to hotel industry members regarding state, local, and federal laws that impact hotel operations. During the legislative session, the AGC will review, negotiate, and testify on proposed legislation. And the AGC will conduct educational seminars throughout Texas and promulgate informational alerts and updated articles on best legal practices regarding legal issues affecting the lodging industry.

THLA is a 501(c)(6) trade association headquartered in Austin, Texas, serving the Texas lodging industry. THLA has over six thousand lodging industry members located throughout Texas. The AGC reports both to the General Counsel and to the CEO. The AGC position is based out of THLA's office building in the Judge's Hill neighborhood in central Austin. Travel within the State of Texas is required up to 15% of the time. The position allows for remote work up to one day per week.

Essential Responsibilities

Provide legal advice and legal services to THLA members.

• Answer legal questions from THLA members and provide basic legal advice and best legal practices to the industry.
• Develop subject matter expertise regarding legal topics pertinent to lodging operators including but not limited to Texas hotel occupancy tax laws, public improvement district laws, labor and employment law, nonprofit corporation laws, etc.
• Publish legal department updates, legal guides, and legal alerts for the benefit of THLA members.
• Speak, make presentations, and conduct seminars for THLA members, destination marketing organizations, local government officials, and tourism industry leaders on legal issues of importance to the lodging and tourism industry.
• Assist the General Counsel and other THLA staff in preparing legal briefs and legal correspondence as needed for THLA and certain THLA clients.
• Assist the General Counsel and other THLA staff in the production and presentation of educational webinars and other materials for members.

Provide local hotel tax advice and other hotel law related seminars throughout Texas.

Advise and report to the General Counsel and CEO on statutory and legal developments and issues affecting THLA, THLA members, and the lodging industry broadly.

Governmental affairs.

Write and edit articles for monthly membership newsletter ("Industry Update").

Supplemental membership communications.

In coordination with the General Counsel and CEO, develop, edit, and send communications pieces as needed, such as emergency email alerts, and legislative alerts.
