What You'll Do
The Automation Support Engineer is responsible for supporting the installed base of instrumentation and control systems. This is a technical position with varied responsibilities based on the individual's interests, abilities, and experience. All experience levels will be considered. Strong interpersonal skills are key.
- Instrumentation Support
- Evaluate installed instrumentation performance in a given application.
- Troubleshoot and analyze instrumentation and field wiring issues.
- Perform instrument engineering design calculations.
- Support instrumentation installed base through lifecycle planning and migration.
- Control System Support
- Support control system platforms such as performing software and hardware upgrades, system administration activities, diagnosing software and hardware issues, troubleshooting control logic, and developing new control strategies.
- Configuration of control modules and Batch systems.
- Technical Consultant
- Provide PLC, DCS and various control platform support.
- Provide engineering support to instrument technicians and electricians.
- Partner with operations to troubleshoot automation issues, optimize process controls, tune loops, implement safety improvements, and modify existing control strategies.
- Collaborate on standards development.
- Evaluate innovative technology.
- Develop relationships with internal resources and external partners to provide effective plant support.
- Project Management
- Partner with stakeholders on support projects with responsibility from scope development through implementation.
- Participate in large capital project teams to ensure installed automation and instrumentation can be effectively supported after startup.
Qualifications and Skills
Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited university, chemical engineering preferred.Experience working in a chemical, high-hazard manufacturing environment.A strong working knowledge of Safety Integrity Systems.Working knowledge of ISA terminology and symbolism.Awareness of OSHA, NFPA and other regulations with the ability to design to their standards where applicable.Ability to make independent decisions on engineering problems.Strong organizational skills : ability to multitask and prioritize workload.Ability to adapt work plans to accommodate daily plant priorities.Strong written and verbal interpersonal skills.Ability to communicate with individuals of varying technical skills.Considered a PlusChemical manufacturing plant experience.Process instrumentation or Distributed Control System experience.Experience with instrument fieldbus networks such as Foundation Fieldbus, AS-i, or Device Net.Experience with DeltaV or other process control systems.Experience specifying, commissioning, and supporting industrial process instrumentation (pressure, temperature, level, flow, valves, analytical devices).Experience with batch control applications.Experience with SAP, Smart Plant Instrumentation, PI, or AMS.Experience administering Microsoft Windows-based computer systems.Working Conditions
Willing / able to work in plant environments (inclement weather) as required.Work is performed within a controlled environment; some areas require hearing protection.Ability to work additional hours / weekends as needed.Ability to wear all required PPE.Perks and Benefits
