ICU Unit Overview

Number of Beds :

Nurse-to-Patient Ratio :

1 : 2–3 depending on acuity

Common Diagnoses / Patient Types :

Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA)

Sepsis

Respiratory failure

Cardiac (rate and rhythm control)

Medical detox

Arterial lines, Central Venous Pressure (CVP)

Drip Management :

RNs are required to titrate drips

Common titratable / set rate drips typical to an ICU setting

Charge Nurse Coverage :

No charge nurse on each shift

Emergency Room oversees ICU operations

Support Staff :

No nurse aides or patient care techs on this unit

Respiratory Therapy Equipment :

Range from nasal cannula to ventilators

RNs are expected to troubleshoot but not manage RT equipment

Telemetry Monitoring :

No monitor techs

RNs are required to read and interpret their own strips

Tele monitors brand not specified

Shift Details :

12-hour shifts (7 : 00–7 : 00)
