The Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist position is integral to SPIN by taking the steps to actively support a life of possibilities for individuals supported in Residential Services. The Therapeutic Recreation Specialist utilizes the APIE process to support individuals and the team to plan, develop and implement quality person-centered Individual Support Plans that are outcome driven and based on the needs and desires of the individual.
Accountabilities of a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist
- Completes required training education / certification, continues professional development and seeks knowledge of relevant resources and information in order to maintain certification from the National Council of Therapeutic Recreation Certification.
- The Recreation Therapist is responsible for developing and implementing goal driven recreation programming that is consistent with individual’s needs, abilities, and interests. The provision of services includes a variety of potential interventions with an emphasis on recreation modalities in either a one-on-one and / or group format conducted both within and outside the home and / or facility. The ultimate goals of therapist interventions include improving physical, cognitive, emotional and social functioning, health awareness, leisure education, life & employment skills and the achievement of an optimal level of personal independence for each individual.
- Collaborates within a multidisciplinary team to complete the APIE process by contributing to and / or implementing recreation Therapy and / or sensory assessments to determine the chosen outcomes, needs, preferences, and capabilities of the individual.
- Acts as a mentor / support to all students, volunteers & interns, provides direct clinical supervision, feedback and evaluation when needed.
- Maintains a residential caseload of 30 + individuals developing detailed CPS person centered activity calendars.
- Conducts weekly billing audit and ongoing follow-up focusing on accuracy of planned calendars and regulatory requirements of CPS documentation.
- Develops and facilitates ongoing formal training and support as needed to Residential Assisting Directors and Direct Support Professionals regarding CPS implementation and documentation.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.Strong organizational skills and the ability to create and adhere to procedures and timelines.Be flexible, adapt to change and multitask when necessary.Ability to work independently as well as effectively with team members.Ability to demonstrate flexibility in order to meet programmatic and customer needs.The tools you need :
BS or higher in Therapeutic RecreationCertified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist or eligible to sit for exam with expectation to acquire CTRS credential within 6 months of hire.2 years of experience working with people with disabilities requiredAt least 1 year of experience working within SPIN Residential servicesDriver’s license, vehicle, insurance and willingness to travel throughout the greater Philadelphia regionBasic computer skills- MS OfficeSPIN Offers Benefits to Their Employees Who Work 30+ Hours.
