Overview
The Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenator (ECMO) Specialist is responsible for the daily operation of the ECMO program under the direction of the ECMO Coordinator. The ECMO Specialist oversees monitoring and troubleshooting of the ECMO circuit and related equipment during the management period. They maintain and assess ECMO circuit function and integrity, and independently ensure administration of blood products and medications is accurate and safe for patients ranging from neonatal to geriatric. They work with the bedside nurse to ensure adequate perfusion, correct acid-base balance and hemodynamic stability within ordered parameters, and maintain other parameters as ordered by the ECMO service. The ECMO Specialist may manage CRRT when connected in-line with the ECMO circuit and facilitate participation in Physical / Occupational Therapy. They perform technical skills with efficiency, accuracy and safety, anticipate, troubleshoot, and respond to crises and emergencies according to policy and procedure. The ECMO Specialist performs quality control, quality assurance and preventive maintenance per policy and procedure. The ECMO Specialist assumes responsibility for continuous learning, engaging in educational activities annually or pursuing advanced academic education, while developing and achieving personal and professional goals. The ECMO Specialist maintains proactive involvement in quality improvement by identifying issues and evaluating quality. They can assist other departments to cover staffing and / or patient care needs. They will assist the ECMO Medical Director and ECMO Coordinator in the collection / review of quality improvement initiatives, using internal and external data to benchmark with the goal of establishing best practice. The ECMO Specialist will participate in domestic and international transport needs for ECMO including ground, helicopter and fixed-wing flights.
Responsibilities
- Operate the ECMO program daily under the direction of the ECMO Coordinator.
- Monitor and troubleshoot the ECMO circuit and related equipment during the management period; assess and maintain circuit function and integrity.
- Independently administer blood products and medications, ensuring accuracy and safety for patients from neonatal to geriatric.
- Collaborate with bedside nurses to ensure adequate perfusion, acid-base balance, and hemodynamic stability within ordered parameters; maintain other ordered parameters.
- Possibly manage CRRT when connected in-line with the ECMO circuit and facilitate participation in Physical / Occupational Therapy as needed.
- Perform technical skills efficiently, safely and accurately; anticipate and manage crises and emergencies per policy.
- Perform quality control, quality assurance and preventive maintenance per policy.
- Engage in continuous learning and pursue ongoing education; contribute to personal and professional goals.
- Participate in quality improvement by identifying issues, planning, and evaluating quality outcomes.
- Assist other departments to cover staffing or patient care needs; support ECMO Leadership in quality improvement initiatives and benchmarking.
- Participate in domestic and international ECMO transport (ground, rotorcraft, fixed-wing) as needed.
Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience : Graduate of an accredited Respiratory Therapy program with current Florida licensure as a Registered Respiratory Therapist, or graduate of an accredited Registered Nurse program with current Florida licensure; a minimum of 2 years ICU experience is required. Preferred one year of ECMO Specialist experience with Primer training.Licensure / Certification / Registration : Required : Basic Life Support (BLS); PALS (may be obtained within 6 weeks of hire); ACLS (may be obtained within 6 weeks of hire). With one of the below : RRT licensure with State of Florida, or RN Licensure with State of Florida.Motor Vehicle Operator Designation : Employees in this position will not operate vehicles for an assigned business purpose. Note : A frequent driver is defined as one who uses his / her personal or Shands automobile at least daily, or makes at least five trips per week, or drives over 150 miles per week in the performance of the job.Details
