Overview

Postdoctoral Appointee – Synchrotron Characterization for Critical Materials. We are seeking a highly motivated and flexible postdoctoral researcher to join the Applied Materials Division (AMD) at Argonne National Laboratory to develop advanced methods for in situ and operando characterization using the Advanced Photon Source (APS). This work supports critical material recovery and battery recycling initiatives and will primarily be in collaboration with METALLIC (Minerals to Materials Supply Chain Research Facility) and the ReCell Advanced Battery Recycling Center.

The role will involve designing, implementing, and demonstrating synchrotron-based techniques to inform process development, expediting the development of critical material recovery and battery recycling strategies.

Responsibilities

• Drive development of in situ and operando characterization methods at APS to support critical material recovery and battery recycling initiatives.
• Collaborate with METALLIC and the ReCell Advanced Battery Recycling Center to design, implement, and demonstrate synchrotron-based techniques for material synthesis, manufacturing, and recovery projects.
• Apply three-dimensional imaging (microtomography and nanotransmission X-ray microscopy), diffraction, and spectroscopy techniques to investigate materials and processes.
• Develop and / or build custom experimental apparatus beyond standard commercial tools for compatibility with synchrotron techniques.
• Contribute to related projects, including material synthesis and separation processes, as needed.

Compensation and Benefits

The expected hiring range for this position is $70,758.00–$117,925.00. Pay offers are determined based on factors such as scope, responsibilities, qualifications, and market conditions. Comprehensive benefits are part of the total rewards package.
