The Surgery Department at Sugar Land Veterinary Specialists and Emergency Veterinary Care is looking for an experienced Veterinary Assistant that has a desire to expand their knowledge and skill level as an assistant. We're looking for a highly motivated and flexible person to add to the team as we're growing.

  • Essential duties and responsibilities (others may be assigned as needed)

Patient care (performed AFTER training)

Animal restraint

  • Aseptic preparation techniques
  • Assist technicians and in preparing patients for a variety of surgical procedures
  • Advanced assistant skills- once trained & under supervision of technician or DVM

    • Obtaining vitals

  • Collecting laboratory samples (blood, feces, urine, etc.)
  • Administering IV medications
  • Section Responsibilities

    • Organizing, Planning, and Prioritizing Work

  • Cleaning & maintaining of section area and equipment
  • Laundry
  • Restocking supplies in section area

    • Office supplies

  • Other section areas when slow
  • Communicating patient care concerns to technician
  • Assist in consistent communication throughout the patient care staff
  • Knowledge & skills needed :

    • Professional client & patient service / communication skills

  • Professional oral & written communication skills with staff, doctors & leadership
  • Professional computer & phone etiquette

    • Typing & writing skills

  • Reading comprehension
  • Time management- Utilizing time effectively and efficiently to accomplish tasks accurately

    • Initiative & adaptability / flexibility

  • Accountability
  • Active learning & critical thinking
  • Professional appearance
