Trades Worker III

This position functions under the general leadership and guidance of the Director of Logistics. The Trades Worker III is a multi-skilled Trades Worker position requiring skilled labor and excellent attention to detail, including the ability to work in all areas of carpentry and building trades skills. This position requires the construction maintenance and repair of all City-owned buildings. A skilled background in carpentry, plumbing, painting and welding is necessary for long-term success in this role.

This position is designated as an emergency essential position that requires performance of emergency duties and actions to prepare, repair and recover the City before, during and after any adverse storm events (hurricane, tornado, tropical storm, winter storm, severe thunderstorm, flash flooding etc.) or other conditions (natural or manmade).

• Perform advanced maintenance and repair tasks across multiple trades, including electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, and general facilities upkeep.
• Diagnose and troubleshoot complex systems or equipment failures and implement effective solutions.
• Install or upgrade systems such as lighting, plumbing fixtures, mechanical systems or structural components.
• Ensure compliance with building codes and safety standards during installations.
• Carpentry : repairs related to all interior and exterior surfaces.
• Ceilings : tile replacement, including grid, drywall patching, tape and finishing various surfaces.
• Walls : repair cracks, holes and damage to all the various surfaces.
• Doors : repair all hardware, frames and thresholds.
• Windows : repair hardware, frames and glass.
• Cabinets : repair or replace hinges, knobs, rails, finishes and surfaces.
• Furniture : assemble and repair chairs, desks, shelving units, file cabinets, picture frames and workstations.
• Floors : replace and or repair the various types of flooring, vinyl tile, ceramic tile, concrete and wood decking.
• Stairs : Repair or replace broken steps, rails and bracing. This requires building and installing stringers and various types of stairs.
• Trim : repair or replace various types and materials of window, door, floor trims and moldings while matching the finish to the existing colors and stains.
• Painting : strip, sand, prime and paint various buildings' interior and exterior walls, doors, cabinets and furniture.
• Plumbing : repair or replace sinks, drains, faucets, toilets, water lines, sewer lines, hose bibs, water heaters, drinking fountains, sprinkler lines and heads, backflow preventer, and install new items listed above. For new construction, install new water lines, sewer lines, toilets, sinks and water heaters in compliance with building codes and as specified in drawings.
• New construction of buildings : carpentry, framing, finishing, roofing, setting of doors and windows in accordance with building codes and as specified in drawings and design documents.
• Maintains and tracks time and ensures jobs are completed in a timely, organized fashion.
• Selects material and gives input on material and supply needs for jobs.
• Assists in the training of Trades Workers in the field of carpentry, plumbing, welding, paint processes, repairs and equipment operations.
• Performs general tasks in the construction, demolition, renovation, modification, installation and repair of buildings, equipment and facilities.
• Completes assigned projects specific to the trade may be necessary.
• Alternate projects not routine to the trade may be necessary.
• Necessary to work outside regular working hours.
• Respond to urgent maintenance issues, such as leaks, power outages or equipment malfunctions, to minimize disruptions.
• Complies with all City safety policies and programs in the performance of their duties, including, but not limited to, vehicles, equipment, tools and facilities.
• Complies with all City and department employment policies and procedures.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Advanced understanding of multiple trades, such as electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry and masonry.

Ability to work at heights well above ground level from / out of various types of equipment.

Knowledge of the materials, tools and equipment used in the work assigned.

Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary in the work assigned.

Ability to understand and transmit oral and written instructions.

Skilled in the operation of the equipment used in the work assigned.

Skilled in the use of hand and power tools applicable to the work assigned.

Physical strength and agility sufficient to work outdoors under variable weather conditions.

Proven ability to work as part of a team while also functioning independently.

Ability to establish and maintain effective, cooperative and team-focused relationships with team members, leadership, other departments and the general public.

Knowledge and skills utilizing Microsoft Office Products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook).

Summary :

This position requires moderate exposure or risk to physical health and / or physical safety (i.e. exposure to environmentally hazardous material, heavy equipment).

Both outdoor and indoor year-round work as related to the maintenance, repair, and construction of City buildings and structures.

Work requires moderate to extreme exposure to one or more disagreeable conditions (i.e., inclement weather, excessive noise, extreme temperatures, strong odors, or dust).
