Overview
Technical Director, Civil / Geotechnical Engineer with expertise in Heap Leach Facility Design to join WSP Mine Waste Management Team. This opportunity can be based in Reno, Nevada or Tucson, Arizona. Work as part of a regional team on challenging mining, heavy civil, and geotechnical projects.
Responsibilities
- Managing and executing a wide variety of mine waste geotechnical engineering projects, including field investigations, laboratory testing programs, data interpretation, and geotechnical analyses.
- Leading the civil design of mine waste containment facilities, including initial layout and design, site selection, geotechnical and hydrologic analyses, and preparation of design drawings and technical specifications for construction.
- Scoping, directing, and reviewing complex geotechnical analyses (soil mechanics, stability, seepage, thermal modelling, deposition modelling, run-out analyses for mine waste or water embankment dams and waste rock spoils).
- Independently managing projects according to client-approved scopes of work and delivering high-quality reports on time and within budget, subject to senior review.
- Working with and leading multi-disciplinary project teams.
- Supporting technical proposals and design work packages in response to client needs.
- Managing the work of junior engineers.
- Participating in and promoting a safety-first culture.
- Collaborating with professionals from a variety of disciplines to provide trusted-advisor service and future-ready solutions for clients.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, adhering to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Geological Engineering14+ years of relevant (post-degree) experience in a consulting engineering or mining environmentProfessional Engineer license required (multi-state preferred)Demonstrated experience on tailings management and heap leach facility design in the mining industry; familiarity with commonly used softwareAdvanced proficiency with technical computations, interpreting plans and specifications, and applying regulationsAbility to work independently and provide leadership with adherence to QA / QCStrong leadership and interpersonal communication skills for interacting with employees at all levelsAnalytical skills with attention to detail and ability to prioritize in a fast-paced environmentAbility to elicit cooperation from diverse stakeholders (senior management, clients, regulators, staff)Sound knowledge in soil mechanics and geotechnical engineeringProject management skills commensurate with experienceClient liaison and business development capabilitiesStrong technical writing and problem-solving abilitiesAbility to delegate and lead project teamsCommitment to workplace safety and adherence to health, safety, and harassment policiesFlexibility to adapt to varying schedules; occasional travel may be requiredPreferred
