Position Overview
Managing Consultant at Mackinnon Bruce International — The Seed Production Manager of Dry Seed will manage the strategy and production of dry seeded vegetable and flower crops. The Seed Production Manager is responsible for the planning and execution of contract dry seed productions for Exclusive, Non-Exclusive & Proprietary varieties. A seed production technician supports this role and reports to both the dry and wet seed production managers. The Seed Production Manager of Dry Seed will report to the Vice President of Research & Development and work closely with the Seed Production Manager of Wet Seed. This position is based in Fairfield, ME.
Responsibilities
- Develop and manage a production strategy for internal and external seed productions.
- Develop and maintain a worldwide organic and non-organic seed grower network.
- Determine appropriate controls for productions.
- Select and contract seed acreage based upon internal demand and forecasting.
- Negotiate and coordinate grower contracts.
- Establish and maintain relationships with both domestic and international seed production companies.
- Maintain regular visits to seed production locations to evaluate seed crops at critical growth stages.
- Manage production of high-quality seed in budgeted quantities for domestic and international markets.
- Manage seed production costs to ensure agreed upon profit margins.
- Identify and test new production areas to ensure production supply.
- Manage the production budget.
- Maintain a seed production database including inventory and producibility parameters.
- Ensure field scouting and harvesting meets company quality standards.
- Monitor and audit production grow outs to ensure product integrity and quality.
- Assist in managing the purchase order creation and authorization process.
- Coordinate the delivery of stock seed to support production orders.
- Manage stock seed and foundation seed inventory, quality, and production.
- Create an annual stock seed production forecast.
- Maintain and acquire crop phytosanitary certifications.
- Conduct cross functional production meetings with product managers, purchasing, and demand planning.
- Management of direct reports and performance reviews.
- Support and mentor employee development plans.
- Promote company mission through public workshops and forums as requested.
- Attend relevant industry conferences to the company and build industry relationships.
- Maintain good interdepartmental communication and relationships.
- Staff recruitment and hiring.
- Maintain regular communication with stakeholders regarding the status of productions.
- Set department goals, productivity standards and enhance efficiency.
- Participate and engage in Product Team Meetings.
Education
A college degree in horticulture, agriculture, or agronomy, or the equivalent experience with an applied knowledge of organic and sustainable farming operations and extensive knowledge of growing a diverse number of vegetable crops is required.
Qualifications & Skills
Five years or more knowledge and experience with organic and sustainable farming practices.Three or more years' experience in seed production management of vegetable and flower seeds in both conventional and organic growing systems.Familiar with product lifecycles and product management.Knowledge of basic regulatory requirements for the seed industry both domestic and international.Knowledge of regulatory and phytosanitary databases.Proficient in arithmetic.Exceptional time management.Team oriented with proven ability to work effectively across departments and with external co-operators.Good data analysis skills using Microsoft Product Suite or similar tools.Excellent written and verbal communication skills.Good relationship skills.Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally.Ability to communicate efficiently and professionally.Ability to function with minimal supervision.Proactive, able to prioritize tasks, organized, detail oriented.Physical Requirements
