Youth Services Librarian, Part-Time (Librarian 1) - Scotch Plains Public Library
The Scotch Plains Public Library is seeking a creative, service-oriented, and forward-thinking Part-Time Youth Services Librarian (Librarian 1) to join our dynamic and collaborative team. This Civil Service position is classified as Librarian 1 and requires compliance with all New Jersey Civil Service Commission regulations, including the New Jersey First Act, which mandates New Jersey residency unless exempted under the law.
This entry-level professional librarian role provides a wide variety of library services to children, teens, and caregivers. You’ll contribute to public service, collection development, programming, and outreach, with opportunities to collaborate and grow within a supportive and team-based environment.
Hours :
Up to 25 hours per week, including day and evening shifts and participation in a rotating Saturday schedule.
Primary Responsibilities :
- Provide reference, readers’ advisory, and technology assistance to children, teens, and their caregivers.
- Plan, promote, and present creative programs for youth, such as storytimes, book clubs, STEAM activities, and special events.
- Participate in collection development by reviewing, selecting, and weeding materials in a variety of formats.
- Create engaging displays, bibliographies, and promotional materials to support literacy and library use.
- Utilize online tools, digital resources, and social media to connect with youth and caregivers.
- Maintain a welcoming and inclusive environment that reflects and respects our diverse community.
- Provide bibliographic instruction and guidance on using library resources effectively.
- Collaborate with schools, educators, and local organizations to promote library services and conduct outreach.
- Prepare clear and accurate narrative and statistical reports as required.
- Stay current with professional trends, attend trainings, and participate in professional development activities.
Minimum Qualifications :
Master’s Degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA-accredited program.Eligibility for appointment to the Civil Service title of Librarian 1.Current MLIS students graduating in Winter 2025 or Spring 2026 are welcome to apply.Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.Experience working with youth in libraries, schools, or community settings is highly desirable.Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.Demonstrated familiarity with youth literature, emerging technology, and digital media.Comfort with using and teaching technology and electronic resources.Must comply with the New Jersey First Act residency requirement.Possession of or eligibility for a New Jersey Professional Librarian Certificate issued by Thomas Edison State University.To Apply :
