The Marine Operations Department at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric and Earth Science is seeking a U.S. Coast Guard licensed crew member in charge of the vessel's deck department. The Mate is responsible for the safety and security of the ship under the guidance of the Captain. Responsibilities include the crew's welfare and training in areas such as safety, firefighting, search, and rescue. Carries out orders as directed by the Captain and reports directly to the Chief Mate and / or Captain.
Primary Duties And Responsibilities
- Oversees all maintenance of the vessel's deck equipment and machinery
- Oversees line handlers during vessel movements
- Operates cranes, winches, anchoring machinery, and other scientific instruments
- Oversees small boat maintenance and operates small boats when necessary
- Assists with lading and unlading of all cargo and scientific gear
- Stands navigational watches
- Maintains vessel's chart inventory
- Participates in safety drills as directed by the vessel's Emergency Station Bill
- In charge of vessel when the Captain or senior mate is not onboard or incapacitated to command the vessel
- Member of ship's firefighting team
- Supervise deckhand
- Related duties as directed by the Captain
