Summary Statement
The Library Assistant – Temporary / Floating provides excellent customer service by assisting library users with circulation, reference, and technology needs across the Boise Public Library system. This flexible, temporary position offers the opportunity to support multiple library locations as needed, covering a variety of shifts including days, evenings, and weekends. Initially working up to 19 hours per week for training and onboarding, the employee will transition to an on-call schedule to fill in where coverage is needed. Ideal for someone who enjoys variety, learning new environments, and delivering welcoming, knowledgeable support to library visitors of all ages.
Essential Functions
Assists library users with circulation, reference, reader's advisory, and other library services. Maintains accurate user account information and resolves customer concerns tactfully, using discretion and initiative to meet user needs. Assists the public with library computer use and related technology. Performs routine or repetitive tasks with specific instructions and set procedures, such as performing proper library opening and closing procedures and checking in returned materials using library computer systems. Maintains library collections by accurately sorting and shelving materials. May assist with offsite events for users of all ages, as needed. Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
High school diploma or equivalent and some customer service experience, or an equivalent combination of education and / or experience. Knowledge of customer service techniques, basic computer skills, ability to learn and use library systems, work independently and use initiative, multitask, exercise tact, problem-solve, communicate effectively in English, perform all essential functions as assigned.
Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training
Experience in a library setting or working with diverse populations.
Special Requirements
Applicants must be able to pass City of Boise background check processes which includes a criminal history check and reference checks in accordance with the City of Boise Hiring Process Regulation.
Working Conditions
Physical effort : up to 35–50 pounds, pushing / pulling up to 75–100 pounds, noise level moderate to occasionally loud. Work includes sensory ability, close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception. Employees will sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, grasp, climb and balance. Position requires hand / finger dexterity. Work environment : inside conditions, outdoor weather, dust, odors, mist, gases, exposed to bodily fluids. This position works some weekends and evenings and schedules vary.
