Overview
The Washington State Attorney General's Office seeks an Assistant Attorney General to work in its Corrections Division, providing legal representation for the Department of Corrections in civil, civil rights, and habeas corpus matters.
Responsibilities
- Draft pleadings, motions, and briefs in state and federal courts, including appeals.
- Manage discovery practice and prepare post-sentence petitions in the Washington State Court of Appeals.
- Represent DOC in motions, trials, and appellate arguments.
- Prosecute community supervision violations and work with Community Corrections Officers.
- Collaborate with professional staff to meet litigation deadlines and achieve strategic goals.
- Investigate claims, gather evidence, and communicate with incarcerated individuals and opposing counsel.
Qualifications
ABA-accredited law school graduate or completed WSBA Rule 6 Law Clerk Program.Licensed to practice law in Washington State; applicants actively pursuing admission by motion are considered.Several years of civil or criminal litigation experience; willingness to mentor newer attorneys.Strong work ethic, excellent judgment, and ability to multitask with a robust caseload.Superior communication, analytical, and writing skills; knowledge of state and federal civil procedure.Commitment to public service and continuous professional growth.Compensation and Benefits
Salaries are set by a transparent schedule ranging from $82,212 to $153,996 per Appendix B of the AWAAG CBA. Benefits include medical, dental, retirement, life, and long-term disability insurance, as well as paid holidays, vacation, sick leave, and flexible work arrangements.
