Firefighter / Paramedic

Under the general supervision of a Company Officer or Senior Firefighter, the incumbent responds to emergency scenes and performs firefighting and advanced life support emergency medical assistance duties. An employee in this position is responsible to perform job duties in an accurate manner in order to protect the health and safety of the citizens and members of the Fire Department. This is an IAFF, Local 3472 position.

Note regarding Starting Wage : The general rule is that new employees to the bargaining unit enter at a Step 1 for the wage for the position. After evaluation by the City, new employees may be eligible for a higher Step if they meet the Lateral Hire requirements as follows :

• Possess certification at the Firefighter II level.
• Possess a valid State of Michigan Paramedic License
• Possess at least one year (12 continuous months) of continuous full-time service as a Firefighter / Paramedic with another Fire department.

Candidates who qualify for Lateral Hire will be required to successfully complete a four week department orientation program.

The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing, sitting, standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling and lifting of persons or objects weighing in excess of 100 pounds, and moving in areas of difficult or dangerous access. Also requires physical mobility, dexterity, full range of motion and normal sensory abilities including vision, hearing, touch and smell. The incumbent operates emergency vehicles in all weather and lighting conditions.

The work environment characteristics described are representative of those encountered while performing essential functions of this job classification. While performing the functions of this job, the employee is exposed to wet and / or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outside weather conditions, extreme cold or heat, fire, risk of electrical shock, hazardous materials and risk of vibration. The work environment involves extremely high risks with exposure to potentially life threatening situations or unusual environmental stress requiring a full range of safety and other precautions.
