• Moves to higher ladder levels will result in a percentage increase of current pay that aligns with the new job description.\n\nOverview\n\nThe Medical ICU (MICU) at Barnes-Jewish Hospital is a 42-bed intensive care unit that specializes in the care of patients experiencing a full range of clinical issues, including abnormal blood disorders, diabetic ketoacidosis, heart, renal and liver failure, GI conditions, infectious diseases, asthma and a multitude of other conditions and diseases. We provide advanced training in critical care lines and interventions such as Swan-Ganz catheters, arterial lines, central lines, ventilators, dialysis, continuous renal replacement therapy and targeted temperature management. Our extensive orientation and Nurse Residency Program are designed to ensure new nurses are equipped with the critical thinking and advanced skills needed to be successful in our high acuity unit.\n\nThe unit is led by a Patient Care Manager, Assistant Nurse Managers, Team Lead Charge Nurses, an Advanced Practice Clinical Nurse Specialist, and Clinical Education Specialists. Additionally, the unit is assigned a case manager, social worker, physical and occupational therapists, dietitian, and a pharmacist. This multidisciplinary team works in conjunction with the Medical and Pulmonary Attendings, Fellows, Residents, Nurse Practitioners, Registered Nurses, Patient Care Technicians and Unit Secretaries. Our comprehensive multidisciplinary approach ensures we provide the highest quality of care to our patients and their families. The nurse-to-patient ratio is typically 2 : 1, with some patients requiring 1 : 1 nursing due to very high acuity.\n\nPreferred Qualifications\n\nRole Purpose\n\nProvides direct patient care activities including assessment, diagnosis, planning implementation, and evaluation within the guidelines of the standards of nursing care.\n\nResponsibilities\n
• Promotes patient and family centered care in a healing environment. Educates patients and their families on how to manage their illness or injury, including post treatment home care needs and medication administration.\n
• Participates in activities that promote patient safety, quality and regulatory compliance. Participates in professional development.\n
• Develops, implements, and documents individual plans of care with defined goals in collaboration with other members of the interprofessional team and patient, family or caregiver in accordance with the established guidelines and standards of nursing care. Proactively plans and ensures communication of the plan of care across the continuum of care.\n
• Uses critical nursing skills to assess and evaluate physical, psychosocial, and emotional needs according to standards of care. Assess patient preferences and barriers to involvement in care, including their values, emotional, spiritual, cultural, and population-specific needs.\n
