Senior Electrical Engineer - Substation Design

Opens : Senior Electrical Engineer position with HYBRID work arrangement. Location : Any Black & Veatch U.S. Regional Office or remote eligible. This role may require in-office days as part of the hybrid schedule.

Overview

This is a technical leadership role in substation design, covering distribution, sub-transmission, and transmission level voltage classes. The candidate develops electrical design deliverables, supports project management, and interfaces with clients, vendors, and subcontractors.

Responsibilities

Function as a technical specialist or lead substation design engineer for distribution, sub-transmission, and transmission level projects
Develop electrical design deliverables, including protection and control design (protective relays) and / or physical design
Participate in management, project scheduling, and work / resource planning meetings
Interface directly with clients, vendors and subcontractors
QA / QC projects and mentor junior engineers

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an accredited program

Minimum of 8 years related work experience

Ability to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements, which may include background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search in compliance with applicable laws

Preferred Qualifications

Substation Design Experience - P&C and / or Physical

Professional Engineer (PE) License or active pursuit of PE

QA / QC and Substation (HV) project lead experience

Strong written communications and leadership capabilities

Ability to plan, set priorities, delegate, and build effective teams

Advanced knowledge of engineering design principles and relevant standards

Key Responsibilities (Engineering Excellence)

Provide guidance on design standards, codes, and internal policies

Develop and maintain engineering standards

Offer technical guidance across projects and disciplines

Quality and continuous improvement : adhere to quality programs and support process improvements

Engineering production : prepare complex deliverables, perform analyses, manage data, budget, schedule, and quality

Project coordination and client focus : coordinate with team members and manage client expectations on moderately complex projects

Knowledge sharing and people management : mentorship and potential involvement in performance management and development

Resource management and administration : contribute to resource strategies and ensure policy adherence

Certifications

Most positions require professional registration or licensure in the home office country, or active pursuit of such registration.
