DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

Colleges, Housing and Educational Services (CHES) is a multi-funded organization within the Division of Student Affairs and Success (DSAS) at the University of California (UC) Santa Cruz. CHES provides leadership in the areas of college student life and residential services, housing services, facilities, capital planning, dining services, conference services, early education services and business and financial analysis for these areas. Through these units, educational and developmental programs and services are offered to all members of the campus community including students, faculty, staff, children and external constituents.

CHES provides on-campus housing and dining services to nearly 9,500 undergraduate and graduate students in ten residential colleges and six multi-college affiliated residential communities which support single students and students with families.

JOB SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of an Assistant Director for the Colleges, the Coordinator for Residential Education (CRE) serves as a member of the student life team. The Coordinator for Residential Education provides a variety of direct support services to residential students in residence halls and apartments and assists with the management of the residential education program. Themes and areas will vary across colleges and units.

The Coordinator for Residential Education is responsible for community building in an assigned residential area; educational, multicultural, developmental programming and curriculum implementation; advising, conflict mediation, policy enforcement and jurisprudence; on-site crisis and emergency response coordination; student staff recruitment, selection, supervision, training and evaluation; housing and facilities coordination; budget management; safety and security; advising student groups; and special projects.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary : $66,900 / annually

Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

    JOB DUTIES

    25% - Residential Curriculum Administration and Community Building

  • Facilitates the development of community, civility and responsibility among residents, and the development of an environment conducive to their academic, intellectual, cultural and social development.
  • Provides leadership for student development in a variety of areas including : academic success, diversity and inclusion, social justice, faculty involvement, health and wellness.
  • In conjunction with other college staff, develops and implements a comprehensive residential education program. Participates in the planning and implementation of college and unit programming.
  • Serves as primary resource person for student residential staff in the implementation of residential curriculum, ensuring the student staff are able to effectively deliver the
  • curriculum.

  • Supervises and advises college / unit-wide programming, and college specific theme program development, student groups, and projects.
  • In conjunction with the residential team, develops methods to assess the quality of life within the residential units, participates in ongoing research activities specific to residential student issues and conducts ongoing program assessment of residential programs.
  • Identifies trends and needs in the community and makes recommendations for future program development.
  • Sets a standard of communal and individual behavior within the residential community. Counsels and advises residents with personal and living area problems. Resolves conflict among residential students, hears grievances and initiates mediation.
  • 25% - Student Staff Supervision, Development, and Advising

  • Hires, trains, evaluates and supervises student residential staff.
  • Monitors standards of employment and provides ongoing evaluative feedback.
  • Assists student staff in their personal and professional development and achievement of their learning goals.
  • Sets and models a standard of ethical behavior for the student staff team.
  • Plans, implements, and participates in a comprehensive training and education program for the student staff team, including ongoing staff development and in service training.
  • Provides guidance and training appropriate for new and returning student staff members.
  • Facilitates individual and group meetings with student residential staff.
  • Attends all residential team meetings, training, sponsored social programs, and retreats.
  • 25% - Student Conduct

  • Serves as a conduct officer, directly responsible for assigned conduct caseload, including record keeping.
  • Applies principles of student development theory, restorative justice, and educational philosophy in the implementation of the student conduct curriculum.
  • Advises students and makes referrals to appropriate resources and agencies.
  • Ensures due process, develops resolutions, assigns sanctions, and conducts follow-up
  • as appropriate.

  • Communicates / collaborates with supervisor and the Office of Student Conduct and Conflict Education, to ensure equity in the resolution / sanction process.
  • Enforces residential and university policies as outlined in the Terms and Conditions (housing contract) and Student Policies and Regulations Handbook, addressing student conduct issues
  • such as noise, parties, alcohol and other drug use, disorderly behavior, maintenance and

    custodial issues, etc.

    15% - Crisis, Disaster and Emergency Response Coordination

  • Participates in on-call rotation throughout the calendar year ranging from college pair to all student residential
  • living spaces.

  • Provides backup and assistance to the Residential Community Safety Program staff and other members of the college / unit and residential staff for monitoring safety.
  • In conjunction with other staff, has responsibility for on-site crisis management, emergency response and disaster assistance.
  • Coordinates with campus and community resources (counseling and psychological services, police, fire etc.) in response to student physical or mental health issues.
  • Consults with the Assistant Director for the Colleges and Associate Director as appropriate.
  • Provides assistance where needed, particularly in facilities and dining, during any time of disruption to normal campus operations due to inclement weather, disaster, power outage, strike or protest activity, etc.
  • Has key access to all residential areas for use in emergency, to provide access for fire safety inspections and for student lockouts.
  • Promotes a safe and healthy workplace; monitors and addresses conditions and practices that could result in workplace injury or illness, and effectively responds to injuries that do occur.
  • Submits workplace injury documentation as outlined in policy.
  • 10% - Administrative and Other Duties as Assigned

  • Attends all regularly scheduled professional staff meetings including but not limited to unit team meetings, meetings with the Assistant Director for the Colleges, Coordinator for Residential Education (CRE) meetings, and Colleges, Housing, and Educational Services (CHES) meetings.
  • Participates in department and / or campus-wide committees and activities as assigned.
  • Provides support to the Assistant Director for the Colleges and the Associate Director for special projects, and performs other duties as assigned based on college / unit, department, and University needs.
  • Regularly participates in and attends ongoing professional development and training opportunities including workshops, conferences, and webinars. Continues to gain knowledge and ensure competency across a variety of areas including, but not limited to, educational and restorative philosophies and practices, implicit bias and emergency response. Reviews relevant literature to remain current on emerging trends and issues in higher education.
  • REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Direct experience in housing and residence life administration or student affairs.\
  • General theoretical knowledge base in the area of student development theory OR related theoretical knowledge (e.g. community development, program development, educational theory, leadership development theory, cross-cultural communications, and / or group development).
  • General understanding of the current trends and issues impacting student populations and higher education. Awareness of demographic data related to diversity in higher education.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a diverse and multicultural setting. General interest in, knowledge of, and experience with dimensions of diversity that result from different identities, such as ethnic, socioeconomic, racial, gender, sexual orientation, disability, and cultural differences.
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Verbal and interpersonal communication skills sufficient to successfully interact with large groups, families, the public and other professionals.
  • Assessment and conflict mediation skills sufficient to listen to and summarize individual and group concerns.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle crisis situations involving student welfare and safety.
  • Experience in recruitment, motivation, goal setting and evaluation of student leaders.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to work independently, to set priorities, and to make decisions under pressure.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Substantial related administrative and record keeping experience.
  • Budget oversight.
  • Proficiency with a computer and computer applications including word processing, page layout, spreadsheet, database, calendar and communications (e-mail / web browser) software.
  • PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's degree in related area
  • Professional affiliation with professional organizations such as ACPA-College Student Educators International, Association of College and University Housing Officers International (ACUHO-I), National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA), etc.
  • Experience with program presentation, facilitation, and group leadership development.
  • Previous live-in experience with undergraduate, graduate and / or family residential programs with increasing responsibility for program development and student staff supervision or equivalent experience.
  • General knowledge of student conduct including experience interpreting and implementing policies and procedures.
  • SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
  • Selected candidate must pass the employment misconduct disclosure process.
  • Must possess CPR / First Aid / AED certification or have the ability to obtain it within 60-calendar days of hire.
  • Will be required to complete Title IX (Sexual Harassment Training) every 2 years.
  • Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
  • The selected candidate will be required to work all scheduled hours on-site.
  • Ability to work a variable schedule including evenings and weekends.
  • This is a live-in position that requires the employee to live in the provided apartment full-time in a Three Year Contract position.
