Overview
Assistant City Engineer role at City of Saco . The City is seeking an experienced and motivated civil engineering professional to join our team. This full-time position supports planning, design, and administration of municipal infrastructure projects to ensure safety, functionality, and longevity of public works systems. Responsibilities
- Design and prepare plans, specifications, and cost estimates for roads, sidewalks, drainage, sewer systems, parks, and other municipal projects.
- Prepare and administer contracts, bids, and payment evaluations.
- Conduct site surveys, inspections, and compliance reviews for construction projects.
- Coordinate with contractors, City staff, state / federal agencies, and the public to ensure projects meet established standards.
- Support stormwater management compliance (MS4), subdivision / site plan reviews, and traffic control planning.
- Maintain GIS data, records, and engineering documentation.
- May assume duties of the City Engineer as assigned.
This is a highly visible position requiring direct public interaction, coordination with multiple departments, and supervision of staff on a project basis.
Education / Experience
Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering (preferred), or 10+ years of progressive experience in design, construction, and maintenance of infrastructure / utilities.Valid State of Maine driver's license required.Knowledge & Skills
Solid understanding of civil engineering principles related to municipal infrastructure.Familiarity with surveying, rights-of-way / easements, and applicable state / federal regulations.Working knowledge of MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices) and OSHA construction safety standards.Proficiency with engineering and technical software (e.g., AutoCAD, ArcGIS, HydroCAD, Microsoft Excel).Strong written and verbal communication skills with ability to manage multiple projects independently.Ability to build effective relationships with contractors, agencies, residents, and colleagues.Preferred Training / Certifications
OSHA 10 Construction Safety & Health (or ability to obtain within 6 months).Experience with modern surveying equipment and data management tools.This role combines office-based technical work with field inspections; exposure to varying weather conditions and construction site environments is expected.
