The Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) Operator Inspector accepts full ownership of all aspects of operating and programming Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs) and works closely with the Engine Shop and Duncan Manufacturing Solutions (DMS) to ensure timeliness, compliance, and airworthiness of aircraft components and fabricated parts. This individual performs highly technical dimensional inspections using CMMs, Vision CMMs, laser scanners, and other precision measurement tools, ensuring complete documentation and thorough communication with customers and team members. This role combines advanced inspection techniques, regulatory expertise, and team mentorship in a clean, safety-oriented environment.
Essential Job Functions
- Performs high-quality inspections of complex aircraft engine parts and DMS-fabricated components using touch probe and optical CMMs (including Zeiss systems), laser scanners, and hand tools such as calipers and micrometers. Follows Duncan Aviation procedures, customer specifications, and applicable maintenance manuals.
- Creates and modifies dimensional inspection programs based on 2D / 3D CAD models, technical drawings, and GD&T symbols. Troubleshoots program issues and optimizes inspection routines for efficiency and accuracy.
- Executes First Article Inspections, Gage R&R, and capability studies to validate measurement systems and ensure production quality.
- Prepares and maintains comprehensive records including process sheets, work orders, and inspection reports in accordance with company policy, FAA regulations, and AS9100 standards.
- Performs intermediate equipment checks for calibration status and maintains a clean, organized environment. Collaborates with others on verification checks, failure analyses, and source inspections.
- Interfaces directly with customers and internal departments to ensure stated and unstated needs are met. Conducts on-site inspections as needed, providing professional, service.
- Trains entry-level employees in metrology basics and mentors peers in inspection best practices, raising the overall quality and regulatory knowledge of the department.
- Identifies and implements improvements in inspection techniques, programming efficiencies, and overall lab workflow.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by management.
Job Specific Requirements
Licenses / Certificates : Repairman Certificate eligible; RTS / QI designation eligibleAttendance : Regularly scheduled in person attendance required.Physical : Reads small print; repetitive motion; tolerates working in confined spaces; tolerates standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching and sitting; routinely lifts up to 50 lbs., occasionally up to 100 lbsEnvironmental : Tolerates working in noisy environmentsEducation And Experience
High school graduate or equivalent requiredCMM / CAD / 3-D modeling experience requiredZeiss, Calypso or similar CMM Software prior experience preferredGD&T Certificated preferredFamiliar with AS9100, PMA and FAA Part 145 StandardsStrong attention to detail with goal of 100% documentation accuracyAvailable Benefits
