Electrical Project Engineer – Substation (US Eastern Region)
Black & Veatch invites you to join our Engineering & Information Technology team as a Technical Specialist or Project Lead for substation projects across the U.S. Eastern Region. The Opportunity
- Serve as a Technical Specialist or Project Lead, providing coordination, guidance, and expertise on assigned substation projects.
- Support projects ranging up to 765 kV in detailed design and engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC).
- Develop protection and control design deliverables : protective relays, panel arrangements, one-line / single-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, AC / DC schematics, relay panel wiring and equipment wiring for high-voltage substation designs.
- Prepare physical design deliverables : yard layout plans, grounding, lightning protection, control building arrangements, and auxiliary AC / DC power systems.
- Perform or oversee quality review of electrical substation design packages.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to junior team members.
- Prepare electrical equipment specifications and Bills of Materials (BOM) for procurement and construction.
- Coordinate project activities with clients, vendors, subcontractors and other stakeholders.
- Present proposals, designs and project activities.
- Potential travel to client and vendor offices and / or project sites for design reviews, construction coordination and field verification.
- Manage design budgets and schedules.
- Support business development or pursuit activities.
The ideal candidate will be located in or willing to relocate to one of the U.S. Eastern Region Power Offices : Ann Arbor, MI; Raleigh, NC; Atlanta, GA; or Orlando, FL.
Key Responsibilities
Develop knowledge and provide guidance on design guides, standards, systems, engineering codes and B&V policies. Offer technical guidance to others regarding projects and disciplines.Apply knowledge and comply with B&V quality program on assigned tasks. Provide guidance, direction, and support for continuous improvement and change management efforts.Prepare engineering deliverables for larger or multiple projects. Conduct research and develop recommendations for equipment and / or material selection. Oversee data collection, synthesis, and management for engineering work.Prepare engineering calculations following standard methods and principles. Manage assigned budget, schedule, and quality requirements. Apply advanced engineering techniques and analysis on problems and methods.Actively coordinate with internal / external team members on moderately complex projects.Assist with identification of key client interests and drivers on high-voltage substation projects. Communicate client interests and drivers to project team members and develop approaches to accommodate these concerns.Provide consulting and guidance to project teams in a particular practice area. Design complete projects or support multiple projects on complex technical challenges. Foster knowledge management and mentoring.Mentor lower-level professionals and identify successors to train in the specifics of their role. Participate in career planning, learning and development, and performance management processes.Assume responsibility for engineering resources for small groups of a single discipline.Preferred Qualifications
High-voltage (HV) substation design experience – Physical and / or Protection & Controls.Project lead and technical specialist experience overseeing utility substation clients and projects.QA / QC review experience – Quality Assurance / Quality Checks.Experience coordinating and communicating with clients, multidisciplinary leads and project managers.Professional Engineer (PE) license.Proficiency with Bluebeam Revu and Microsoft Office programs (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited program.Minimum of 5 years related work experience.Work Environment / Physical Demands
