Responsibilities
- Support the core facility's daily operation (35%)
Maintain a customer-service-focused environment
Provide support in either a self-service or full-service core facilityCoordinate and manage equipment and facilities with usersClean, service, calibrate, and check equipment for proper functionPerform daily activities to prepare for experimental protocols and facility operationPerform periodic preventative maintenance on facility instrumentationAdhere and contribute to facility safetyMay be designated Safety Coordinator for the core facilityManage chemical waste by ensuring appropriate waste containers, maintaining waste labels, and filing waste disposal requestsFacilities, Equipment, and Information Management (35%)Build and maintain operational knowledge of all the core facility instrumentation
Provide expert knowledge in two of the core facility's technologies, such as SEM, AFM, Raman microscopy, or UPLC-QToFSupport teaching labs in assigned techniques and instrumentation as neededProvide advanced education and training to core facility users and staff on highly specialized equipment or technologyPerform procedures and experiments using the facility's specialized equipment or services consistent with the facility's protocolsSupervise sample preparation and storage in the core facilityCreate, update, or make improvements to standard operating proceduresDevelop customized sample acquisition and data analysis methods for usersTroubleshoot equipment failures, procure repair parts, implement repairs, supervise field service, and test equipment for proper function after repairsSupport the use and maintenance of the facility computer systems and specialized instrument control and analysis software, facility data server, and / or researcher's data server accounts, data backup and archiving, and online reservation system and / or researcher's reservation accountsMaintain appropriate documentation of core facility activitiesCreate and maintain collaborative relationships with other facilities in the universityCreate quotations and invoices for core facility instrument usageConsult with students and investigators on project design and experimental setupResearch (30%)Maintain collaborations with external investigators
Contribute to the progress of assigned research projects through consultation, experimental design and implementation, and data analysisRemain current on emerging techniques, software programs, and instrumentation in the field of expertisePerform data analysis for researchers using specialized data analysis software in a form useful for further statistical analysis or publicationAt the request of investigators, review methods sections of research papers related to the core facility's specialty that will be submitted for publicationAt the request of investigators, support the writing of grants including writing descriptions of experimental designs and determining the costs associated with performing experimentsMinimum Qualifications
Ph.D. in analytical chemistry or closely related field. Expertise with at least 2 techniques utilized in the core facility. Experience with the maintenance and operation of chromatographically coupled mass spectrometers. Broad familiarity with analytical instrumentation.
