Overview
NATURE OF WORK : Performs basic as well as higher level clerical functions related to the day-to-day operations of the library in the areas of circulation, technical services, and shelf maintenance. Work involves responsibility for providing services to library patrons and performing general administrative services. Duties may include checking library materials in and out, processing interlibrary loans, and new patron applications. The position requires the use of independent judgment, initiative, maturity, observation, and communication skills.
Responsibilities
- Receives oral or written instructions from supervisor.
- Organizes work according to established procedures.
- Performs clerical or technical tasks in various units as assigned.
- Provides exemplary customer service to library users.
- Maintains familiarity with library policies and procedures. Ability to answer patrons' questions regarding loans, fines, placing holds on materials, library programs and meetings. Enforces library policies as needed.
- Utilizes SWPL's integrated library system software and public catalog website at a high competency.
- Performs circulation tasks including processing the loan and return of books, periodicals, audiovisual equipment and related circulation materials; renewing materials; placing hold requests; preparing books and materials for interlibrary loan; and receiving fines and fees.
- Inspects returned books, materials, and equipment for damage.
- Assists library patrons in the use of library materials or refers inquiries to a librarian.
- Processes library membership applications and issues membership cards. Updates patron information as necessary.
- Sorts and shelves books, newspapers, periodicals, and other library materials.
- Follows prescribed routines for overdue, damaged, and lost library items.
- Opens and closes the library.
- Performs basic cataloging tasks.
- Registers patrons for programs and room reservations.
- Maintains records, logs, or other statistical information as directed by supervisor.
- Effectively works with multiple age groups in different departments as needed.
- Reports work accomplished to a supervisor.
Other Job Functions
Relieves other employees as directed by supervisor, including responsibility for a unit in the temporary absence of a professional librarian.Receives and responds to general information requests by telephone or in writing.Assists in completing an annual collection inventory.Makes minor repairs to books, documents, periodicals, and materials as needed.Checks in orders received and distributes items to relevant departments as necessary.May prepare posters, bulletins, and newsletters to promote use of the library and its materials.Monitors supplies for reordering.Makes suggestions regarding the purchase of source materials, books, equipment, and supplies needed for the maintenance of the collection.Actively pursues professional growth opportunities, including keeping current of new library trends through readings and workshops.Performs related work and assists with special projects as required.May assist in the preparation and administration of programming.#J-18808-Ljbffr
