Position Summary :
Are you ready to lead and grow a high-performing team of skilled craftworkers? We are looking for a strategic and hands-on leader to drive our self performed work program, supporting scopes in concrete, steel, carpentry, and more. This role manages jobsite assignments for our craft workforce, forecasts future craftworker numbers and training needs, reduces manpower variability, and more. The ideal candidate will have proven experience successfully managing manpower, preferably within Story's scope(s) of work.
Summary of Duties :
- Partner with human resources on craftworker hiring and training / development, as well as any employee relations issues.
- Collaborate with the general superintendent and operations manager to plan and assign weekly project deployments.
- Design and execute strategies to minimize headcount variability and facilitate predictable, sustainable growth in Story's self performed work.
- Establish a strategic backlog of self performed work to buffer against labor fluctuations and proactively pursue self perform work opportunities in the market.
- Align hiring, training, and resource allocation with upcoming project demands.
- Forecast craftworker count and training needs 6-12 months ahead.
- Review labor and equipment estimates for self-performed work prepared by the estimating team.
- Share finalized labor / equipment plans with project teams during kick-off to ensure alignment.
- Monitor monthly labor projects for self-performed work against initial estimates, escalating any discrepancies and leading strategies to resolve issues.
- Advocate for a strong safety culture, collaborating with safety personnel to ensure safe working practices.
- Identify and implement tools, workflows, and initiatives to enhance self performed work efficiency and effectiveness.
- May perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications :
10 years of industry experience, with experience leading / managing successful labor operations with responsibility for hiring, training, project assignment, safety, quality, and productivity.Experience with manpower allocation / utilization and development of craft labor and field leadership.Bachelor's degree in construction engineering, construction management, or similar preferred, but not required.Experience in labor project and cost estimating of scopes within concrete, steel, general carpentry.Must possess advanced knowledge of scopes within concrete and steel, including constructability, scheduling, and costing.Travel : The position is based out of Ames, IA with regular travel to jobsites across central Iowa. Occasional overnight travel may be required.

May be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, moving mechanic parts, vibrations, load noises, and more within OSHA standards with visiting jobsites. May be exposed to outdoor conditions that include inclement weather such as heat, humidity, cold, wind, and dust. May be expected to carry up to 30 pounds regularly and 50 pounds occasionally, stand for long periods of time, walk for moderate-to-long distances on varying surface conditions, climb, crawl, crouch, reach, grip, push, and pull without issue.
