Counselor I

Overview

Counselor I role at MGA (Middle Georgia State University) located in Macon, GA. This full-time, 12-month exempt position supports students' personal and educational needs through counseling, outreach, and collaboration with university staff and resources.

Responsibilities

• Counseling (65%)

Provides ongoing individual and group counseling, conducts initial assessments, manages client cases, treatment planning, and documentation in accordance with center policy.

Maintains confidential records per privacy laws (HIPAA) and has working knowledge of Electronic Health Records (EHR); assists in policy development and participates in university committees or task forces; serves on the Assessment & Care Team; identifies as a Campus Security Authority (CSA).

Provides referrals, outreach, and consultative services; develops and delivers workshops on mental health topics; participates in trainings for faculty, staff, and students.

Provides crisis intervention, including same-day emergency appointments for students, faculty, staff, and administrators.

Required Qualifications

Graduate Degree in Counseling, Social Work, or Psychology.

Must be Associate Licensed to practice in Georgia (LAPC, LMSW); must be under clinical supervision and actively pursuing clinical hours toward licensure.

Typically 1–2 years of relevant experience or equivalent apprenticeship / internship.

Knowledge of counseling principles in higher education; knowledge of federal and state laws related to counseling services (FERPA, HIPAA, etc.); experience with short-term therapy, case management, crisis intervention, and group counseling; strong communication and interpersonal skills; computer / software proficiency.
