Position Summary :

The UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Associate Director of Administration (ADA) serves as the chief administrator for the Center. The ADA is responsible for strategic and operational planning; research development and research program evaluation; business plan development and implementation including oversight of finance administration and investments in the clinical arena; analysis of space allocation and facility needs; and human capital including administrative leaders and teams. This leadership position will partner directly with the N.C. Cancer Hospital clinical administration to ensure seamless operations across the Center, UNC Health, UNC School of Medicine and the University as a whole.

The Cancer Center is one of only 55 NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the nation. A matrix organization, its 600+ staff and 400+ faculty members come from Schools and Colleges across the Chapel Hill campus who are actively engaged in basic, clinical, translational, and public health research as well as UNC’s teaching mission. The Center is a highly complex organization comprised of 24 scientific research and clinical programs and is the largest research entity within UNC Chapel Hill with respect to research funding and space. The Center has an overall $200M yearly budget, including $100 million in research dollars and $60M in state funds. The Center has a strong collaborative relationship with administrative leadership at the School of Medicine, University, and NC Cancer Hospital and Healthcare System.

The Associate Director of Administration will assume substantial independent, senior administrative authority on behalf of the Director, having oversight of policy development, financial planning and management, strategic planning, operational management, human resource management, resource planning, sponsored research management, information system integration, facilities management, and research program development. The ADA is also responsible for planning, administration, and renewal application for the main National Cancer Institute (NCI) grant, the Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG), and will plan and oversee a process for enhancing large, multiple-investigator grants. The ADA will work collaboratively with the leadership team, as well as independently, to make decisions and lead new initiatives to achieve higher levels of performance across divisions and centers throughout the department, and in coordination with the School of Medicine and the UNC Health system. The ADA will also interface with UNC Health System clinical research entities alongside leaders of the Lineberger Clinical Trials Office (CTO).

The ADA will develop and implement an array of programs and activities intended to promote best practices in all areas of management, and will forge new and improved partnerships through strong and innovative thinking. The ADA will create a new process to engage with industry and pharma as sources of clinical and technology funding that will be highly beneficial at the Cancer Center. The ADA will play a key leadership role in guiding the Cancer Center through the final phase of its five-year strategic plan, ensuring effective implementation of its priorities and positioning the Center for continued success and impact across research, clinical, and community-focused initiatives. The ADA will also help promote the Center throughout internal and external communications, advocating for the mission, and achieving the highest standards of accomplishment for the Center, as well as the University of North Carolina.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements :

Minimum qualifications of an advanced degree, masters or higher (or foreign degree equivalent), and no less than 5 to 7 years of management-level experience in the full range of administrative and financial functions of an academic department or research center in a higher education, research, or health care setting. Candidates with 7 to 10 years of directly comparable experience may substitute for the required advanced degree in which case a bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and the requisite experience is mandatory.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience :

Must have experience with the NIH grant process.

Must have previous experience in research administration.

Preferred qualifications, competencies, and experience include 3-5 years in research, research administration and / or research training; excellent written and oral communication skills; experience with NCI-funded cancer centers is a plus.
