Regional Marketing & PR Manager

Newlab is seeking a seasoned and entrepreneurial Marketing and PR Manager to lead regional marketing and communications in Detroit and elevate visibility for our programs, partnerships, and community. This role is ideal for a self-starter who thrives on building brand awareness, engaging diverse audiences, and executing campaigns that create real impact.

As the senior marketing lead on the ground, you will drive Newlab Detroit's brand presence, oversee local storytelling and event marketing, and build trusted relationships with media, partners, and community stakeholders. You'll also serve as a key bridge to our global marketing and content teams, ensuring Detroit is positioned within the broader Newlab brand. This is a high-visibility role with significant opportunity to influence both regional impact and global perception. This is an in-person role in Detroit.

Key Responsibilities

Regional Marketing & Brand Leadership

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive regional marketing and PR strategy that amplifies Newlab Detroit's unique strengths and aligns with global brand priorities.
  • Act as the senior marketing voice in Detroit, advising leadership, shaping narratives, and ensuring brand consistency across all touchpoints.
  • Identify opportunities to expand visibility of Newlab Detroit through strategic partnerships, thought leadership, and high-profile activations.

Media Relations & PR

  • Cultivate and manage relationships with local and regional media.
  • Proactively pitch Newlab Detroit stories to secure earned media.
  • Draft press releases, media alerts, talking points, and briefing materials; prepare local spokespeople for media opportunities.
  • Track and analyze media coverage, providing insights and reporting back to leadership.

    • Collaboration with Global Marketing

  • Partner with global marketing and content teams to ensure alignment on messaging, cadence, and campaign execution.
  • Source, produce, and coordinate local stories across owned channels (blog, social, newsletters) in partnership with the global marketing team.
  • Ensure timely delivery of assets, content, and reporting in collaboration with the global team.

    • Events & Community Engagement

  • Partner with Newlab Detroit and Michigan Central teams on regional events and activations, ensuring events deliver brand and partnership impact.
  • Drive strategies to attract startups, foster community engagement, and strengthen partner relationships.

    • Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience in public relations, marketing, and / or brand leadership, with proven success driving visibility for organizations, programs, or campaigns.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead marketing strategy while executing hands-on projects in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
  • Strong track record of building and maintaining relationships with media, partners, and community stakeholders.
  • Excellent writing, communication, and presentation skills, with ability to adapt messaging for diverse audiences.
  • Experience leading events and activations that deliver strategic impact.
  • Established network of media contacts in Detroit and / or the broader Midwest region.
  • High level of independence, accountability, and judgment.

    • Preferred Skills (Nice to Have)

  • Experience working with or within startup ecosystems, innovation hubs, or technology sectors.
  • Familiarity with marketing tools and platforms (e.g., HubSpot, Airtable, Google Analytics, Canva).
  • Ability to position organizations for visibility with investor, corporate, and public sector audiences.

    • Compensation

  • $90,000-130,000
