Responsibilities
- Support the Chief Dam Safety Engineer, the Sr. Dam Safety Engineer, and analysts to ensure that Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) requirements are met, ensure dam safety and public safety is maintained, and ensure that professional quality work is supported.
- This is an opportunity to join a relatively small team that focuses on Hydroelectric Dam Safety as it relates to the assessment of conditions and water conveyance, engineering studies, public safety, and FERC regulatory compliance for its 13 River Hydroelectric Dams in Michigan.
- The Hydro Generation Team consists of Operations & Maintenance, System Health Engineering, Dam Safety, Licensing, and Land Management.
- This position will involve a combination of remote office work and some in-person reporting to its headquarters locations. Periodic travel to the 13 dams (spread throughout the state) is expected.
- Lead the Surveillance and Monitoring Program : Evaluating surveillance and monitoring data and developing presentations with graphs and charts for comparison of historical trends and identification of anomalies.
- Leading a small Surveillance and Monitoring Review Committee by presenting the data during quarterly meetings.
- Prepare monthly Surveillance and Monitoring Reports.
- Continuous program improvements.
- Dam Safety Instrumentation Management :
- Initially, the candidate will learn from and work with engineering firms specialized in understanding the instrumentation equipment functionality, troubleshooting instrumentation, data collection, and software functionality.
- Once the candidate has a solid foundation they will take a lead role in lieu of the contracted engineering firm.
- Work with Operations staff on the collection of piezometer readings, weir box readings, Surveyor data collection, and underwater diver findings to track trends and anomalies.
- Track and plot graphs and tables to accurately reflect the conditions at each of the dams.
- This supports the Dam Safety Engineers in effectively assessing the conditions of the various features surrounding the dams and feeding the Surveillance and Monitoring Committee meeting discussions.
- Trouble shooting surveillance and monitoring equipment.
- Working with software and instrumentation vendors to ensure accurate and reliable data collection of the instrumentation.
- Supporting the Dam Safety Engineers with the overall Dam Safety Surveillance and Monitoring Program (DSSMP) and developing annual Dam Safety Surveillance and Monitoring Reports (DSSMR's) for all 13 dams as required for annual filings with the FERC.
- Work with the Supporting Technical Information Document (STID) Coordinator to map and record changes associated with the surveillance and monitoring work.
- A supporting role with additional Dam Safety programs, including the Owners Dam Safety Program, the Emergency Action Plan Program, and various FERC regulatory requirements and communication.
Qualifications
Some Engineering experience preferred in Civil or Instrumentation / technology disciplines.Knowledge of Civil / Structural codes preferred.Experience engineering software and / or technology software.Good communication skills (Written / Oral).1-3 years of experience who is willing to build hydro experience.Education : Bachelor's Engineering degree from an ABET accredited program; ideally in Civil / Structural Engineering.Benefits

Technical Certification Bonus : Synectics is pleased to award its employees a bonus of up to $500 for an approved professional certification. In determining the bonus amount, Synectics will consider the cost of the test(s) for any certification relating to your current position, achieved during your employment with us. Only one Certification Bonus per calendar year may be awarded per employee. Only current, active employees will be eligible to receive this bonus. It will be awarded 90 days after the Synectics office has received documentation confirming the successful completion of the certification.
