Job Description
Grey Development is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Traveling Assistant Superintendent. In this role, you’ll support our Project Manager and company leadership in the successful execution of horizontal construction projects. The ideal candidate will have a foundational understanding of site work, including earthmoving, utility installation, and erosion control, and a strong desire to grow within the construction industry. You’ll work closely with the Project Manager to assist with project scheduling, crew supervision, quality control, and safety management.

Position Details :
- Must be willing to travel — approximately 50% of projects are located in the Atlanta area, and 50% are outside of Atlanta.
- This is an on-site position; remote work is not available.
Key Responsibilities :
Project & Site Support :
Assist the Project Manager in overseeing all on-site aspects of horizontal construction projects, including site development, earthwork, grading, and utility installation (storm, sewer, water).Help develop, maintain, and track the project schedule under the guidance of the Project Manager, ensuring that daily and weekly production targets are understood and communicated to the crew.Support the coordination between the Project Manager, engineers, clients, and subcontractors to ensure a smooth project flow.Provide on-site direction to project team members, equipment operators, and laborers, acting as a key field liaison for the Project Manager.Assist in monitoring project progress, identifying potential issues (e.g., weather, equipment), and communicating them to the Project Manager for timely resolution.Help maintain clear and consistent communication by assisting with daily reports and progress updates for project Leadership.Quality Control & Technical Learning :
Support Project Leadership by ensuring all work performed meets quality standards, project specifications, and engineering designs.Conduct regular site walkthroughs to monitor workmanship, help verify compliance with plans, and report any potential issues to the Project Manager.Assist in implementing project quality control procedures related to site work, compaction, grades, and material installation.Actively learn and apply erosion control best practices to help maintain compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.Safety Management :
Actively promote a culture of safety on site, supporting Leadership's vision for a safe working environment for all personnel.Adhere strictly to all safety regulations (OSHA, company policies) and industry best practices, with a focus on hazards related to heavy equipment, trenching, and excavation.Assist in conducting daily safety meetings (e.g., toolbox talks) and site inspections to ensure compliance with safety protocols.Report any safety incidents or near misses to the Project Manager and assist in any resulting investigations or corrective actions.Resource & Cost Management :
Assist the Project Manager in monitoring project expenditures and tracking costs related to labor, equipment, and materials.Help manage on-site resources, including personnel and equipment, to optimize productivity and reduce waste.Learn to identify potential cost-saving opportunities that do not compromise quality or safety and present them to Leadership.Qualifications & Experience :
Education & Experience :
A minimum of 2-4 years of experience in a field-based role within horizontal construction, with exposure to site work, earthmoving, and utility projects.Growing knowledge of horizontal construction methods, materials, and techniques.Familiarity with the operation and capabilities of various types of heavy equipment (e.g., excavators, dozers, loaders, graders).Basic understanding of site layout, blueprint reading (civil drawings), and grade checking.Familiarity with relevant civil construction codes and environmental regulations is a plus.A degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field is an advantage, but strong field experience will be strongly considered.Skills and Abilities :
Strong desire to learn and develop leadership skills with the ability to effectively support and motivate field crews under the direction of the Project Manager.Good problem-solving skills and the ability to think critically in a fast-paced field environment.Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with team members and Leadership.Proficient organizational and time management skills.Basic proficiency with computers and a willingness to learn project management / reporting software.Certifications & Licenses :
OSHA 10-Hour or 30-Hour Construction Safety Certification is preferred.An interest in or possession of certifications in erosion control is a plus.A valid Driver's License is required; a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is a plus.Job Type : Full-time
