Gator Dredging - Shipyard Outside Machinist (OSM)

This is a great opportunity for an experienced Shipyard Outside Machinist (OSM) to join our growing team! Excellent benefits, 401k, vacation, sick and holiday paid time off.
Must Have at least five (5) years' experience as a Marine Outside Machinist.
Starting Hourly Pay Range for This Position : $25.00 to $28.00. This is based on previous work experience, skills, and current certifications / professional licenses.
Job Responsibilities for the Shipyard Outside Machinist (OSM) :
- Installs, maintains, and repairs propulsion and auxiliary systems for Tugs and Workboats Diesel propulsion systems, rudders and steering gear.
- Installs, repairs, and maintains ship's fluid systems which include pumps, compressors, purifiers, heat exchangers, actuators, and valves.
Tests equipment to ensure the system meets specifications.
- Installs and tests various shop equipment. Performs other related tasks as assigned, some of which may become essential to the position.
- Disassembles various types of equipment and machinery common to maritime vessels and / or general industry including but not limited to pumps, valves, winches, gear boxes.
- Assists in determining repairs and required to bring equipment to rebuilt status.
- Applies knowledge of materials including but not limited to bronze, brass, steel (mild and heat-treated), and stainless steels in fabrication and repairs.
- Responsible for the application and care of all standard shop measuring and hand tools.
- Properly cares for and safely uses hand and power tools and all company property.
- Works with other crafts as needed.
- Overhaul, maintenance, testing of pumps, valves, turbines, condensers, shafts, rudders, winches.
- Setting of engines and prop shafting for new truck-able tug and workboat builds.
- Installs below deck auxiliaries, such as evaporators, stills, heaters, pumps, condensers, and boilers and connects them to steam pipe systems.
- Remove, repair, modify or overhaul various types of marine shipboard equipment and system such as valves, pumps, hydraulics, turbines, reduction gears, generators, anchor windlass and steering gears.
- Set up and operate portable machining tools and equipment.
- Troubleshoot and repair a variety of mechanical equipment may include ANSI pumps, various types of compressors, blowers, fans, gearboxes, extruders, mixers, agitators, and blenders.
- Hand, power, and portable machining tools. Personal protective equipment required.
- General housekeeping in work areas. May be required to attend safety, quality and / or process improvement meetings.
Qualifications for the Shipyard Outside Machinist (OSM) :
- Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent and at least five (5) years' experience as a Marine Outside Machinist.
- Must be able to dissemble, repair, and install various types of equipment and machinery such as pumps, valves, winches, packing glands, and gear boxes.
- Dry Dock Experience Preferred.
- Must be capable of reading and interpreting blueprints and schematic drawings.
- Must have the ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, written instructions / technical manuals.
- Must have the ability to read and comprehend hydraulic and pneumatic diagrams.
- Must be capable of assembling / installing complex mechanical systems, while meeting alignment criteria of systems and equipment.
- Must demonstrate layout proficiency.
- Proficient in use of precision measurement tools.
- Other job duties may be assigned relevant to the trade.
- Must maintain constant safety awareness.
- Must have own tools.
- Must be able to apply basic machine shop math.
- Must have the ability to work at heights, in confined spaces and observe vessel working protocol.
- Must be able to align rotating equipment using dial indicators or laser alignment tool.
- Must be able to read micrometers and calipers.
Physical Requirements :
- Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 50 lbs.
- Must be physically agile to perform tasks. Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces, including enter and moving through manholes.
- May ride vessels in open water.
- Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels.
- Frequent exposure to noise due to machinery and equipment.
- Employee is required to operate trucks, forklifts & man-lifts.
- While performing the duties of this job, you may frequently be required to stand, walk & sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel;
talk and hear. Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, squat, kneel, twist and crawl.
Protective clothing or equipment and face shields or goggles shall be worn when welding, cutting, or working with molten metal.
Physical / Mental Involvement :
Color vision. Frequent to continuous lifting of machining tools and equipment, up to 40 lbs. Standing, balancing, walking, climbing ladders or equipment, reaching above shoulder or out in front, manual dexterity, pushing, pulling, kneeling, bending, seeing, hearing and occasionally lowering self into confined spaces, crawling through small openings and working in reclined positions, as needed.
Works in all areas of the shipyard and on-board ships. Hearing warning signals and reading and comprehending safety instructions.
Must be able to maintain general safety awareness and avoid hazards commonly present in employee's work area.
Environmental Factors :
Exposure to fumes, odors, dust, chemicals, and gases, various temperatures, and ventilation, all of which can cause discomfort or respiratory difficulties.
May work in awkward positions or postures. Exposure to constantly moving machines and mechanical parts and high levels of constant noise.
