Job Summary : Responsible for proactive efforts in minimizing liability risks, with a focus on professional liability risks to the health system.
In the event of an occurrence, the Risk Manager investigates and manages claims through closure as appropriate. If the occurrence develops into litigation, the Risk Manager oversees the hospital's response under the ultimate direction of the health system general counsel.
Minimum Education : Has completed the basic professional curricula of a school of nursing as approved and verified by a state board of nursing, and holds or is entitled to hold a diploma or degree therefrom.
Bachelor's of Science in Nursing required.
Licensure, Registration and / or Certification : Valid multi-state or State of Oklahoma Registered Nurse License.
Work Experience : Minimum of 5 years of experience in a hospital or a related healthcare institution with a clinical focus.
Management experience required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities : Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel and Access as might be used in the preparation of correspondence and reports.
Effective interpersonal, written and oral communication skills. Negotiation, conflict resolution, and crisis management skills.
Ability to integrate the analysis of data to discover facts or develop knowledge, concepts or interpretations. Ability to organize and prioritize work in an effective and efficient manner.
Ability to be detail oriented as required in the examination of numerical data. Excellent crisis management and conflict resolution skills.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities : Investigate incidents in all Saint Francis Health System entities : involves interviewing relevant medical / nursing staff and employees, research and summarizing medical records, and initiating legal counsel.
Provides specialized education clinical expertise to medically related issues, educates attorneys regarding medical facts, and merits of cases.
Collaborates with attorneys in documents production requests / responses to interrogatories. Identifies standards of care, causation and damage procures demonstrative evidence, assists in the identification and retention of expert witnesses, attends deposition trials on assigned cases, identifies opportunities to control costs of litigation via effective resource utilization and time management.
Risk management education : provides information to employees on services provided and information required by risk management during the following forums : unit and / or department specific presentations, monthly new employee orientation, medical resident staff education.
Procure devices and implement quality initiatives specific to Safe Medical Device Act (SMDA) compliance collaborates with QI on incident reviews and sentinel event analysis.
Risk management direction on an as called basis to mitigate risk / liability exposure : on call availability 10 days a month, monitor patient / family complaints, network with system entities and personnel communicates progress / outcomes in a timely manner, directs support staff and patient accounting representatives in implementation of account adjustments, provide risk management perspective and guidance throughout the system.
Project management of system issues identified as high risk. Initiates research and development teams. Facilitates and coordinates direction and outcomes.
Maintains proficiency in VERGE for identifying and reviewing pertinent patient and visitor events and complaints as well as entering follow-up claim information as required.
Weekly call in a four (4) person rotation.
Decision Making : Independent judgment in making decisions from many diversified alternatives that are subject to general review in final stages only.
Working Relationship : Coordinates activities of others (does not supervise). Has input on performance evaluations but does not prepare or give.
Works directly with patients and / or customers. Works with internal customers via telephone or face to face interaction.
Works with external customers via telephone or face to face interaction. Works frequently with individuals at Director level or above.
Works with other healthcare professionals and staff.
