Plating Process Engineer

PURPOSE AND PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITES

As a key member of the Quality team, this individual will be responsible for coordinating and analyzing chemical and process control tests in the lab of an Aerospace and Defense surface finishing facility.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Managing the functional performance of an aerospace plating line with capabilities in anodic coating (MIL-PRF-8625, Type 1C Boric Sulfuric, Type II Sulfuric Acid, Type III Sulfuric Hard), nitric acid passivation (AMS2700, Type II and VI), electropolish (ASTM B 912), and cadmium plating (AMS-QQ-P-416).
  • Performs hands-on surface finishing operations in support of troubleshooting, research, development, and new (or existing) processing line qualifications.
  • Solves and / or participates in the solution of issues related to plating processes, documentation, and quality problems.
  • Mentors personnel in the proper setup and processes required to clean and chemically process using defined methods, measuring devices / techniques, process control methods, etc.
  • Helps manage waste streams and help effectively treat and store hazardous waste that is accumulated from the plating process.
  • Ensures that required chemical solution testing is performed according to established schedules.
  • Ensures that process control tests (periodic test panels, etc.) are performed according to established schedules.
  • Maintains control of laboratory documentation.
  • Reviews and implementation of chemical process testing in accordance with industry standards.
  • Maintains chemical processing trend analysis.
  • Participates in environmental reporting as required.
  • Maintains preparation standardization of lab solutions.
  • Responsible for ordering of lab supplies and maintaining inventory.
  • Responsible for calibration equipment as necessary.
  • Maintains a clean and safe work environment.
  • Participates in process improvement efforts.
  • Works closely with supervisors and employees throughout the facility.
  • Reviews and implements quality assurance requirements.
  • Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND / OR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • 5-8 years of experience in managing a metallic plating line’s performance (i.e., solution analysis, periodic testing, troubleshooting poor performance, continuous improvement, record storage, etc.)
  • BS / BA in Chemistry / Chemical Engineering or other similar science.
  • Basic wet chemistry skills, titrations, analytical skills, and spectroscopy experience.
  • Data collection and interpretation experience
  • To conform to U.S. export control regulations, applicant should be eligible for any required authorizations from the U.S. Government.
  • Proficient in spoken and written English

  • Must be a self-starter, able to work independently and as a team, while supporting internal and external customers.
  • Ability to adapt precedents and traditional approaches to develop solutions to complex problems requiring a high degree of ingenuity and innovation.
  • Able to work without appreciable direction.
  • May lead functional or project teams and provide training and mentorship to other employees.
  • NADCAP Auditee experience preferred.
  • Must have excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Strong computer skills using Microsoft office products.
  • Must have a regular and dependable attendance record.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • May work in an office environment but will spend much time on the factory floor. May be exposed to dirt, heat, sparks, noise, fumes, and dust.
  • Office work includes working at computer workstations.
  • Factory floor work may require movement of materials in handling containers and carts.
