As a Laboratory Technician II in the Chemical Laboratory of the Water Quality Division, this position, under the supervision of professional chemists, is responsible for sampling and performing more technical and complex chemical tests and analyses of water samples.
Duties and Responsibilities
Performs and is responsible for the collection of water samples from designated locations that are in regions of varying terrain close to and distant from the laboratory as assigned, employing standard collection techniques.
Operates a motor vehicle to travel to field sites and to transport samples and supplies as assigned.
- Conducts various field and / or laboratory tests according to United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) protocols, including but not limited to pH, turbidity, and chloride, independently and without supervision.
- Keeps updated written records according to EPA protocols, of procedures, observations, analytical results, sampling, etc.
so that the information is continuously and readily available to the chemists.
- Responsible for cleaning laboratory apparatus and glassware. Keeps laboratory work and storage areas neat and clean at all times.
- Responds to consumer complaints by conducting customer interviews to find facts regarding complaints, collects samples as required, and explains causes to customers to allay their concerns.
Explains laboratory procedures that will be done on their samples and the expected response time before results are available.
Prepares written reports on investigations and transmits ultimate findings to the customer.
Under unusual field conditions, applies knowledge of procedures to select an alternative sampling location or innovative procedure as required.
Remains alert to field conditions and makes oral or written reports to chemists of those conditions that may deviate from normal.
- Submits written or oral recommendations to chemists on corrective actions as required.
- Assists in research projects and performs other duties as required.
Minimum Qualification Requirements A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school, including or supplemented by some course work in science involving the application of laboratory procedures and techniques and three years of laboratory work experience in a chemical, biological or microbiological laboratory.
Special Work Requirements Ability to tolerate exposure to chemicals, noxious fumes, hazardous and toxic substances while using appropriate safety gear.
Physically able to climb, walk, and / or crawl in confined conditions and / or remote areas while carrying fifty pounds of equipment / samples.
